Hi all,
After a bit of searching and not coming up with much, want to ask about blanking the EGR on an early D3 V8. Mainly because I've just had it done by my local Landy specialist. It was in for a few items, and they detected a leak in the EGR (sticky valve, I guess), and blanked it off, and it seems to be running fine. I know this is commonly done in diesels, and done it myself in a few older models, but they indicated it may throw up a computer fault from time to time, and if it gets annoying, they're happy to replace the non-functioning EGR with a new one.

If the V8 can happily handle not having an EGR, I'm happy not to replace it.

Has anyone with the petrol V8 blanked off or removed the EGR, or should I be looking to replace it with a functioning EGR at some stage?

Not having it in use is great for your engine internals - it keeps the intake much cleaner, however EGR is used to reduce harmful NOx in the exhaust fumes. So, if you are ok with the air we all breath killing us just a little bit more, then go for it.

Ouch the guilt of it all [tonguewink]

While I have concern for the environment in general, if I was primarily interested in reducing pollutants int he atmosphere, I wouldn't have bought a V8 [bigwhistle]

No error code so far? How long have you had the blanking plate in for? Can the EGR system be turned off electronically (e.g. through Nanocom or the like)?

With a software patch it can, that's what they do with the TDV6 with EURO4 + models.

So is there actually a software patch available for the V8 then?

No idea but that's how it would be done.

We all fit snorkles to try and make sure we are getting nice clean air into our engines and yet people don't worry about getting the filthy exhaust gasses pushed back through the engine via the EGR systems, The first thing I did to my Navara was to blank off that sucker[biggrin]
NASTY little things EGR valves[bigwhistle]

True, but emitting lots of exhaust fumes that aren’t healthy is slightly different than emitting lethal fumes. There is a reason for EURO 6 and the statistics of deaths from exhaust fumes in cities bear it out. I guess my point is that we all play a tiny part in the world order. Even diesels, of which I own one, have awful exhaust fumes, forgetting the actual makeup of it. The fine particles are not good for human lungs. This is unfortunately why the government has to legislate such things out as if we were individually left to make our own decisions, we’d choose what benefits us 99.99% of the time, not the greater good overall.

Anyhow, sorry, I’m no angel, it was just food for thought, and off topic.

So far I've only found ECU modification patches for the D3 TDV6 not petrol V8 or V6 (does the V6 motor have EGR?). e.g. IIDTool EGR And Speed Limiter Patches – BAS Remaps, Powering the Landrover tuning world! (https://secure.bellautoservices.co.uk/store/iidtool-egr-and-speed-limiter-patches/)

So a bit of an update, I've had it back for about a week. I'm getting a check engine light about once a day. I was resetting it with the Nanocom. I noticed that while I was doing this, the fuel use, going by the dash computer, was quite high, over 21L/100km for around the suburbs.

A couple of days ago, I stopped resetting the code, and thought I'd just live with the engine light on the dash for a bit, and fuel use seems to have improved back to normal, although I haven't driven it a lot in that time.

So I'm wondering if once the ECU decides the EGR isn't working, it adjusts something in it's operation to cater for the fact it's not working, and doesn't simply just flash the dash light.

Anyway, makes me think that perhaps I should replace it, but wondering if partially blanking it to reduce exhaust gas flow into the intake, without totally blocking it, might be worthwhile. But I might run it as is for a bit and see how it goes.

So I've been running it for a week now with the Check Engine light on Amber, and it's been all good. Today, the Check Engine light turned off by itself. I'm guessing the ECU has decided that it's not going to get sorted, and as it's not a critical problem, it will stop warning me. Fuel use seems to be back to normal. So will let it go a bit longer and see if it starts giving warnings again. If not, will probably keep the EGR blanked.
