View Full Version : D4 - are all Aus delivered models air suspension?

Are all the Australian-spec Discovery 4's air suspension or were the base model 2.7L TDV6 coil spring like the D3? I have read that in Europe, unlike with the D3, the GS Passenger and Commercial variants were air suspension for the D4.

I would say they all came with air since i dont think we got the D4 in anything but SE/HSE trim.

I believe that to be incorrect. My understanding is there are four trim levels with the D4:
TDV6 - which is the 2.7 TDV6 motor standard up to (and including 2012) but could be optioned to the 3L TDV6.
SE - 3L TDV6
HSE - 3L TDV6
V8 - 5L petrol V8 sits above the HSE (costs about $30,000.00 more for a total of $127k ish when brand new) - as far as I know the only option on it was metallic paint or not...

Thats engine choice not spec/trim level, still the only models that would be coil we didnt get here like S/GS/XS and commercial.

Yes and no, from everything I can see and read, the two are tied in together. The spec/trim level determines the engine choice. Or, if you prefer, the engine choice determines which trim/spec level you get.
In SE and HSE it is always either the 3L TDV6 or SDV6 engine - unlike the previous three Discovery models which had a turbo diesel or petrol V8 option, these trim/spec levels in the D4 didn't have any other engine option.
But in the base model, badged on the back as TDV6 it is 2.7L TDV6 as standard up to 2012, but could be optioned with the 3L for extra. Post 2012 the 3L TDV6 was standard. It seems that the 2012 and earlier models were the only spec/trim level in the D4 range with an engine option.
The top spec wears the V8 badge, not the HSE or SE badge and has the 5L petrol V8.
So you couldn't buy an HSE with a petrol V8 - the closest would be the V8 trim/spec level for an extra $30k which includes a lot more above the HSE than just a different motor. You also couldn't buy an HSE with the 2.7L TDV6 - you would have to down spec to the base model badged as TDV6.

The early D4's in Australia came in three spec's - "S", "SE" and "HSE" though the base model was just known as the "Discovery 4" and the "S" badging was dropped with the D4. The base model Discovery did not have any "specification" badge anywhere on the vehicle.
Mine is a base model MY2011 with 2.7 diesel engine (though it was specced up as a "demo model" by the dealership with most of what comes standard in an "SE").

ALL Australian spec Discovery 4's, regardless of specification, came with EAS - coil springs were never an available option.

I have seen just one D4 for sale which had coils and 5 seats - whilst coils and 5 seats were notionally "standard" (which is how they show up on, for example, Carsales listings) in practice the D4s were brought in with compulsory upgrades of EAS and 7 seats. If if recall correctly, the owner of the coils/5 seater stated in the ad that he'd specifically ordered his vehicle without the upgrades.
Edit: and I think that his vehicle also had cloth seats, so that may also be a compulsory upgrade.
NB: this is also why the notional cheapest list price of the D4 of $67,000 was misleading - you couldn't actually get one of the coils/5 seat models unless you specifically ordered it, so in practice the range started at about $80k. JLR are doing something very similar with the D5 - as I understand it the bottom spec vehicles aren't currently available.

I don't think so,D4 TDV6 was always 2.7,which finished MY12,and then became TDV6 detuned 3L.
Higher output D4 was called SDV6,and was available in SE,HSE,in D4.

I have a MY10 3.0 TDV6. Twin turbo, 180kW, 600Nm
After 2011 this engine was badged SDV6, but it didn’t change under the hood.

Verbs is right. I also have the top spec 3.0L in my MY10 HSE.

I had a base spec 2.7 TDV6 which was specced up with 7 seats and leather. But even the base spec 5 seater with cloth seats would have had air suspension. Here's a link to a 2010 brochure - 2010 D4 Brochure (http://australiancar.reviews/_pdfs/LandRover_Discovery4_L319-I_Brochure_201007.pdf) - see technical specifications section.
As I understand it, dealers need to purchase cars from LR to put on their forecourts and it is the dealers that work out the specs of the cars they think will sell. Which is why the majority of D4 they ordered would have had 7 seats as it makes the car more versatile. Same is true for the D5, like Arapiles says if you want a 5 seater you have to spec and order one yourself.

Whether we call it 'no badge', 'S' or TDV6 we are referring to the same vehicle - the cheapest, entry level base model, pov pack...
As you've pointed out, unlike the Discovery 3, these entry models don't have an 'S' badge actually on the vehicle. I haven't seen any reference in literature to it being called 'S' spec. It is referred to as 'TDV6' on RedBook and Carsales which usually take the manufacturers naming conventions - hence why I used that. But it matters not so long as we know we are referring to the same spec/trim level.
I don't think so,D4 TDV6 was always 2.7,which finished MY12,and then became TDV6 detuned 3L.
While I don't know if the 3.0L TDV6 that replaced the 2.7L TDV6 was detuned or not, you are correct that it replaced it and was not an optional upgrade in earlier variants - my mistake above. So the point still remains that the spec/trim level determined the engine you received.
So:
S/no badge/TDV6/pov pack - received the 2.7L TDV6 up to MY2012 and then 3.0L TDV6 (detuned?) MY2013 onwards - as such late (Dec?) 2012 delivered vehicles will have the newer engine as they had been changed over.
SE/HSE - 3.0L motor - sometimes badged as TDV6 other times SDV6.
V8 - top of the range, most expensive with the 5.0L petrol V8.
And it seems that the consensus is that all came with air suspension...

TDV6 3.0l that replaced 2.7l was definitely detuned.MY13 onwards,with 8 speed auto,6 speed was dropped.
The higher spec 3.0l became SDV6,with 8 speed auto around the same time.
Confusing,i know[biggrin]

Is it just detuned or is it different in some key parts? i.e. is it just the ECU map tuning that differentiates the pair or is it also different turbo's etc also seperatigtt them?

Mapping, and tuning is different, and from memory one turbo.
Stock it had similar power and torque to a tuned 2.7l.

The 3.0s (low power and high power) are all Sequential Turbos, so 2 turbos.

Yes, I think you're probably right - so, the owner of the car I saw would've had to order it from the factory with the coils.

Or is it perhaps a private import?

Possibly, but my recollection is that he said in the ad that he'd ordered it like that.
