Hi All,

I bought new door tops, bailey channel etc, and I am recycling my old glass only. The channel kit I bought has rubber and aluminium pieces, and I bought some mastic tape to hold the fixed glass.

Just wondering if anyone as a good tutorial on how to assemble the door tops ?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers,
John

A company in Dandenong who's name escapes me.

Google Mapped where they are and found them.
Foam Sealant Pty Ltd
48-52 Micro Circuit
Dandenong
9702 9989

They had a range of butyl sealant tapes of different widths & thicknesses.

I did post up details at the time and nobody was interested. A 40Mtr roll was cheap but heavy to ship.

Hey Colin,

Can I ask if you put the mastic tape all the way around the door top, or if you put it just around the fixed pane ?

Thanks
John

John,
You better add a link from where those Gal tops come from.

Just the fixed pane.

Thanks Colin, yeah I read your article, very helpful, but it just wasn't obvious to me about the butyl tape.

Colin,

Thanks for reposting this link.

I was trying to fit a replacement kit into my own truck a year or so back and couldn’t get my head around how the filling and spacer strips went. So, along with most of the project, the bits had been sitting on a shelf waiting for a new dose of inspiration.

Given that there are only a few parts you wouldn’t think it could be that hard. The problem was that the last time I had done the job on another truck was in 1984 and the present lot were pulled apart about three or four years ago - memory isn’t that good.

Anyway, I looked at the photos last night and pulled all the bits out again this morning. Took the best part of two minutes to work out how it all went back together.

One challenge that I now have is deciding whether or not to buy a new set of channels. I bought replacements about five years ago from the UK and the u-shaped metal frames are already rusting and the rubber overlay is perishing. Not sure if there is a local source selling a better quality product.

Cheers,

Neil

Neil,

The Ho-Hars (Series Land Rover Rescue) at Beenleigh can supply the channel at least, as that's where I got mine. I'm not sure if they can supply new metal bits for you.

John,

Thanks.

I already have the metal fillers/spacers etc. Just need to decide whether or not to use the replacement channel sections that I also have or bite the bullet and start again.

Neil

John,
You better add a link from where those Gal tops come from.

Yeah sure, the company in the UK is SP panels (SP PANELS- Body panel Specialists (https://www.sp-4x4.com/)), I bought the S3 gal left and right door tops without glass :
Galvanised Unglazed Series 3 Left Hand Front Door Top (https://www.sp-4x4.com/Galvanised_Series_3_Front_Door_Top_MTC5383_p/mtc5383-galv.htm)
Galvanised Unglazed Series 3 Right Hand Front Door Top (https://www.sp-4x4.com/Galvanised_Series_3_Front_Door_Top_MTC5382_p/mtc5382-galv.htm)
I am very happy with the quality of the door tops, the only glitch is that with the doors being hot dipped, the bolt threads are clogged up with gal, so I needed a nut die to clean the threads.

I also bought their full glazing kit (bailey channel and metal parts)
SERIES 2/3 FRONT DOOR TOP FULL GLAZING KIT (https://www.sp-4x4.com/product_p/sp234.htm)

But the channel quality was very poor, so I complained and got my money back and I didn't have to send the kit back. I will actually use the metal bits from this kit, and I have now bought better quality from Ho Hars (Series Land Rover Rescue).

Oh, and the cost incl delivery was just under $400.

Cheers,
John

Hellon from Brisbane.

I have a replacement channel kit for my S3 that I bought a couple of years ago from the UK that I have finally gotten around to fitting. However, the channel itself is starting to rust and the rubber outer isn’t terrific. Not so sure of its likely longevity despite painting the housing in the door frame and cut ends of channel with zinc primer.

I ran across someone the other day who had apparently used a similar dimensioned channel that was principally stainless steel or aluminium that supposedly was still going strong after nearly fifteen years - couldn’t remember where it came from. I guess some local caravans, boats etc have sliding windows that have been made with a similar channel set up.

Anyone with experience on this?

Cheers,

Neil

A quick search came up with this Main Channel - Flexible with Stainless Edge 1.52 M length : 350-5266 - Old~Era Services (http://www.oldera.com.au/main-channel-flexible-with-stainless-edge-1-52-m-length-350-5266/)
I didn't check the dimensions but sounds about right, getting expensive though.....

I have a Series III that sits outside in the weather and the window channel I fitted is fading from black to brown. Probably rusting away as well, I do remember paint dipping the ends because they were rusty when I went to fit them.
