Grease with a helthy dose of Moreys Oil Stabiliser.
I was put onto this trick by Andrew @ Les Richmond Auto.
Works a treat.
I also add it to the G/Box, Transfer case and diffs.
Cheers

hope your only adding the moreys to your g/box ect and not grease :D
oil is easyer to clean if it gets water in the joint, i used to just flush out
swivell with kero and refill with oil.
but now the fender is grease filled

I swapped my disco to oil probably about 8 years ago. I had too big a collection of siezed/stuffed bearings and stub axles.
The oil doesn't leak when you use the county double lipped seal.

I use grease because my left ball has been imperfect probably from birth.
( or at least lying in a paddock somewhere in Western sydney for 6 months before being sold)
Had to dismantle the RH swivel as a last final effort to find a shimmy. (good old LR worker had not hammered in the top swivel outer flush)
I can assure you it gets everywhere.
Trick to drain is to top up with ATF and drive around the block. haven't tried this yet but can hardly wait.

when I had my old series two(1958) oil filled hubs I used a 350 gear oil really thick, also wheel bearings I changed to oil filled as well great after doing heaps of river crossings just undo plug drain and use oil can to refill,
never had problems with the bearings in the six years I had.
Used to work on trucks and trailers the ones that had oil filled hubs never changed the bearings just the occasional adjustment, grease filled do not last as long.

Oil.
no seals in axle housing- swivells, hubs and diff swim insame oil.
go the oil if balls in good condition. if not good use the grease.

I did use grease until I upgraded the CVs and fitted the Maxi lockers. I now have oil with no seal in the stub so it floods into the splines and wheel bearings. I'm using 80W140 though, not 80W90 as recommended in the book.

Been a while since I looked at my balls. There should still be some grease on 'em ;)

How often should one check/replace the grease in the front hubs.
Its been 2 years since I purchased my 96 Disco should I be
checking her now?
And is it difficult to do

I've used grease for about 10 years or so now. Why? Well I got fed up of the seals p1ssing out oil all the time!
I've heard plenty of guys out in Oz whinging about the grease and reverting back to oil. Frankly, I've never had any problems. All the problems I've personally had in the hubs have been purely down to water & mud ingress.
The guys that were whinging were pointing their finger at the grease not lubricating properly and not getting into the places it needed to. The only thing I can see is that these guys only ever use their Landys for very short journeys every time - The grease would not have time to warm up and therefore flow more freely. I tend not to use my trucks for short journeys so therfore the grease has plenty of time to warm through.
Just a thought....
Mark.

Oil in both the 110 and 2a. Been using oil for 43 years in Landrover swivels and have seen no reason to change.
If the swivel seals leak enough to allow much oil out, they probably leak enough to allow dust in.

I use grease in mine, the LR one-shot grease (Ricks put that in when I got my maxi's re-fitted).
I normally use oil/Moreys combo and that works well. Some blokes in the club remove the end swivel seal (that bolts to the axle housing), jack one side of the LR up and pour the oil in so that oil is lubricating both CV's and 'sloshes' around while driving within the axle.
I can see shortcoming with this IMO and haven't practiced it so I'll stick to what I know.

I use Nulon extreme grease. it is a soft very tacky waterproof grease. I have drilled and tapped the oil filler plugs and fitted grease nipples. Each time the car is greased I squirt a couple of shots into the swivel housing. Might be full up by now but it does not leak out and there are no cv joint problems.

Grease.
The P38A doesn't have swivel housings so there is nothing to oil or grease.
Ditto the D2.
Does any D2 or P38A owner strip their CVs to lube them? Mine haven't been done and they have 200,000km on them.

At the moment it is still under warranty, so it is whatever LR decides to put in :p

I was looking at the Disco today and I need to minimise the service items my daughter needs to check. It currently appears to have one-shot grease in the front swivels. However, I pulled the bottom drain plug and some oil came out.
I was thinking of topping it up with 90EP and driving it for a week then draining it and refilling with new one-shot.
Any thoughts on this (noting PhilipA's suggestion to top up with ATF and drive around the block, then to drain).
I'd like to change the front bearings over to oil fed as well but I'm not sure I'll have the time. I suspect it's more effort than the rear bearings.

Did them both to oil fed a couple of weeks ago, and there isn't a significant difference between the two for effort. Of course, I didn't strip down the swivels at the same time, which I should have.

Thanks Simon. I'll reconsider doing the oil-fed bearing conversion then. I suppose I can still leave the swivels as one-shot?

the oil that comes out is from the diff, if the inner seal is leaking it gets caught up in the swivel housings..
keep an eye on the diff level.
If your slightly worried about it fill the swivels with a moly based grease which will help the seals and mixes well with the oil.
If your really worried about it rip the normal seal off, pack as much grease in as you can and then put the split seal in.
If your paranoid, strip it down, replace all the seals and speedy sleeve them as youg go
If your delusional just buy a new front end from rover from pinion drive flange disc-disc.
