Has anyone compared a D2 against a D3 s with stand coils in offroad conditions ?
Should be a intersting topic.

I think one of the pommy LR mags did a comparison of all 3 disco models in the last month or so's edition. Don't know if it was an S, but with the regular coils instead of the air suspension, I would think a D2 would kill a D3. With the air suspension, well that's another whole ball game.

I think it was last months 4wd Monthly they compared the base model S D3 with the HSE D3 with air suspension / terrain response. The Air suspension was more capable off road in all conditions tested. They also figured out you were money ahead if you bought the base model and optioned it with the air suspension and terrain response system.
I would like to see the comparission between the Last D2 series and a coiled D3.

The air suspension is always going to win out with or without TR. iIn the D3 it has greater articulation and travel than the coils.
But I'd be interested to know others thoughts on how a factory spec D2 would be better than a factory spec coil sprung D3.

I have the article somewhere in the "archives" of the three discos being compared. From memory the Disco3 beat the D2, EXCEPT, there was mention of the fact of tyre choice. The D2 couldn't get up a mud hill of about 15degrees because it was on Michelin XPCs. The D3 was on Goodyear MTRS. I search for the article

I'm with Simon.
TD5 D2 (springs, CDL) vs TDV6 D3 (springs, no TR)
Assuming same tyres, I reckon the D2.
1. Live axles versus Independent = D2 for articulation.
2. Weight (have to do the sums, but I reckon D2 has a better weight to power/torque ratio). D3 is just too fat.
3. D2 marginally smaller and better in the tight stuff.
I want to see a D90 (with a rear locker) versus a D3 with full kit.

A base Disco 3 S with coils against a D2? Articulation, weight would be 2 big factors along with clearance which the basic D3 seems to lack, but in the air suspension models there is plenty of.

I've got an article somewhere comparing a standard D90 with the current range rover from the overlander magazine, in fact I think you can access it online on the overlander website.

Joel is right ,
The pommy mag that did a 3 way comparison of D1, D2, D3 put the D2 Last!!!
But when you read the details the D1 and D3 had mud tyres and the D2 had road tires!!!
What sort of "comparison" is that!!
I think a D2 would be pretty close to a D3 S ( coil springs ) while the D3 is a little smarter in some of it's electronics - it's also a lot heavier.
So it might really depend on the terrain you chose to test on :!:
Would make an interesting test though if done objectively.

LOL!! It was a rather unfair test. The only fair way to do it would be to use stock vehicles, and the D2 and D3 would have to be coilers because the D1 would be. I remember one line... "This hill doesnt look like much but t stopped the D2 dead with road tyres on". https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Absolute waste of time since the D2 was at an unfair disadvantage due to tyre choice.
Anyway we all know the answer is..... Defender :!: https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Yes I agree... and speaking of Defender, why isnt the Defender available in Auto, if according to the "pro-Autoboxes people" that they are so good...
Because auto's arent that good?? 8)

The coil sprung D3 is only marginally heavier than the D2.
All D3's have the electronic CDL. It's only the rear Diff Lock that can't be fitted without the air suspension.
I think that in original spec and with the same tyres, it would be very close.
The D2 has live axles, but an inferior powerplant. You'd have to compare diesels as the D3 is only available in TDV6 in 'S' spec.

No matter what the outcome it's always going to be an awesdome test.
