View Full Version : Bush Tucker Man versus Maria Sharapova in the mud

Who do you think would sell more Land Rovers?
a). Les Hiddins (aka Bush Tucker Man)
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2006/04/68.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/. Maria Sharapova (19 year old Russian tennis beauty/star)
http://www.tabloidcolumn.com/photos/maria-sharapova-4.jpg
Apparently Land Rover believe the latter as they have just signed Ms Sharapova to become their official 'ambassador', whatever that means
I can understand there is a substantial market for black, bullet-proof Range Rover Sports in Moscow and St Petersburg, but they would have bought them anyway.
Ms Sharapova certainly can hit a tennis ball (has a nice grunt to go with it), she is also 'tidy' to look at, BUT I don't think she will be influencing my next purchasing decision, perhaps for a tennis racquet or balls.
A poll around the office seems to have confirmed the same....well for motor cars anyway...
What do you think?

I used to be the NSW branch President and National Vice-President for the Saab Car Club of Australia when Jenny and I were members a couple of years back. There were many "official" Saab Ambassadors" such as Sigrid Thornton for example, who actually did quite a bit in return for their cars. They were expected to attend events and company luncheons, sponsored event such as the Melbourne Cup and a few others. VIP guests got to talk with these people, and most were actually very entertaining and nice & humble to boot.
..... but a 19-year-old who grunts? :? Some conversationalist, huh! https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

i'm going to try my hardest to put in a sensible post here... https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
it all comes down to LR's target market...
lets be honest, LR aren't exactly building the hard core off roading trucks anymore (i'm sure some people will use them for that though) LR are going soft, forgetting about the whole camping and off road touring thing. and it is a smart move, business wise, because there just isn't enough money in that market...
as opposed to the business exec types who can afford to shell out $150,000 plus on a car and then be able to afford to actually drive it!
therefore who would be a better "face" of LR?
who are all these big city business exec's trying to be?
someone that maria sharapova would date! (what else would you want to be? https://www.aulro.com/afvb/  )
as much as Les Hiddins is a part of this country and a role model to a great number of people (myself included) i think maria is a wise choice for the direction that LR want to head.
cheers,

I dont agree, celebritys aren't representative of real people so who cares what they drive. LR in Aus. anyway should be focusing on ppl like us as we are its target market. Remember the Heart of the Country commercials (toyo I think, if it was LR I'll castrate myself) they celebrated Australian achievement with the link of course to that brand of vehicle, stirring stuff. The recent interview on 4WD TV with Sclarke, is the sort of thing IMO they should be pushing.Real ppl doing real things in Real Landys. Some big titted celeb draped over the bonnet of a RR Sport gives me a stiffy, but doesnt make me want to purchase the vehicle, but some average joe like myself, expousing the virtue of the make and his own passion for it gets me interested. They only make 4Wds, however soft they are going, that is still going to be their main marketing point. If anyone from LRA wants somemore of my ideas send the RR Sport and the BT Chicky babe first and then we'll discuss salary.

Now for those of you that STILL don't understand Landrover in 2006.
Landrover are not trying to sell cars to anyone on this forum, ie anyone interested in offroading or the brand itself. They're trying to sell cars to affulent people who are probably more interested in talking about adventure than living it, and who aren't 4WDers as we understand it.
That's becuase that is where they see the money. And you can't blame them, they have to turn a profit.
So they sign Maria S and turn the Camel Trophy into a G4 which involves mountainbikes, high-profile people and kayaks, all good outdoorsy stuff but not real 4WD. And they have a fashion debut of the RRS, for chrissake. Yes, Maria won't make me buy another LR, but she will raise the brand profile with the target market and that's what matters.
It's where LR is headed and it makes good commercial sense, no matter how many misty-eyed, muddy-footed enthusiasts cry into their flasks of coffee.

mate, i don't like the way LR are heading either, but thats just the way it is... people like us just aren't generating enough profit for LR, so they needed to market the LR brand to a different target audience to a totally different market!
honestly, how many of us forumites are going to rush out and buy a brand new RR sport or vogue? (as much as most of us would love to!)

No arguements on what has been said to date. However, purely from a branding point of view it is going to raise the profile of Landies in general, and that is a good thing. I don't know what LR marketing has been like in the past, but as it stands from what I have seen, there is very little of it. That said, from what marketing I have seen it has predominately been on the back of 4WD magazines, which one would assume is targetting people whom are more likely to go offroad.
Another question is this, if one had the budget to purchase a new D3, Rangie etc that was in the $60-100k+ bracket, how many would take it off road? How many would drive it like they do their current model? I would hope the answer would be yes and exactly the same. But not everyone follows that train of thought. Yes I do take my D3 offroad and it has the dents and scratches to prove it  , but most don't seem to. Then again as someone pointed out in 2-3 yrs time chances are that as people trade out of and up, there will be more out and about. If one were to survey all the 4WD's of all brands, makes, models etc I wonder what the % would be of people who actually used it for its designated purpose?
IMO the bottom line is that whoeever buys the new breed of landies, the main this is that a) they are being bought https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ are seen whether on or off road and with that will come a breath of fresh air to the brand in terms of previous perceptions and this can only be a good thing. And if that means they have to drape some yummy yummy over the bonnet and as I think crump put it succintly, give ya a stiffy, so be it

LRA has signed Jamie Durie as there Ambassador. Watching Backyard Blitz is now better cause you get to see the the D3.
As for Sharapova i agree with Noddy, its wont be making me buy a Land Rover, i would anyway Sharapova or no Sharapova.
I think OI summed it up the best, she only sees the dollars, i dont really think she cares about the maque that much. Matt

I don't think it matters!
Sharapova will sell Landies because the majority of 4WD owners aren't interested in going bush, but will think that they will be attractive to girls like maria if they buy a landy. I'ts standard marketing and it works!
It'll probably get more folks into Landies and if they don't take them offroad, who cares because they'll still be driving Landies and there'll be less congestion in the bush!
And so what if LR targets affluent folks that won't leave the bitumen and those who want to talk about it! Are you telling me that the Japs don't?? Is a marketing campaign that tells you your car will get you home across a desert after you've been bitten by a venomous snake, actually aimed at 'real' bush going folk; or is it aimed at people who won't leave the bitumen and would like to think that their car is unstoppable and a lifesaver!
LR is aiming at the thinking person. 8)
Toymota aims their marketing campaign at idiots, and Missin aims their's at those who can't even spell landcrooza!
The only reason that there are more LC about is Toyota has been successful in convicing those idiots that their car is bulletproof. I've seen an old tojo after it's been hit with a few .50cal and I can tell you that they're not!
I'd rather look at maria than steve irwin!
