Replacing trailer socket

Hi all. Im going to replace my large 7 pin round trailer socket on my disco - I've never been much of a fan of the large plug as for some reason I always seem to get connection issues between the pins with this style plug. Plus with a kaymar rear bar the access to the standard socket is fairly poor.
I would likely replace the socket with a small 7 pin
If anyone has changed over to a different style and made some changes to improve access to the socket? Any pics, espcially with a kaymar bar would be appreciated.

Funny - I've found the large round to be a far better connection than the small round I've used in the past. The 13pin units are better still with their locking mechanism, but that isn't what you asked about.

I'd be keen to see how you go - I've toyed with the idea of replacing the 12S with an Anderson plug wired to the Traxide system.

I replaced my large black plug with a rectangular 7(?) pin plug (on a bracket in the same location). I just cut the wiring where the loom runs beside the spare tyre and spliced in the new wires to supply the new plug.

For some reason I always seem to have trouble with the left hand indicator pin - everything works apart from that one. Now Im just having issues with the whole lot. As I currently dont have my normal tools with my Im just going to replace the 7 pin large socket. Might have to look into those 13 pin units that you mention as Im always up to looking into a better option

I cut off my 12S (white) connector and replaced it with an Anderson plug for the trailer. I’ve left my factory large 7 pin. It’s never caused me any issue however I do use contact cleaner on it occasionally to keep it clean and healthy

The 13 pin is great (I have it on my VW), though quite rare in Aus really. You end up always using an adaptor anyway, likely negating any benefits.

The 12 pin flats look interesting too - compatible with the 7 pin flats, and with the option of feeding high amp as well.

My 12 pin flat for, or to suit the caravan as said also houses or suits a 7 pin, but my Anderson plug is totally separate and tucked in underneath the bumper alongside the 12 pin.

Simple adapter made up by the autorlectrician that includes a 50 amp Anderson lead and plug, from the LR std 7 pin round to 7 pin flat that connects to the camper. Never any issues, and the white LR 7 pin round is still there.

The Anderson on the car tucks in behind the bumper when not in use, complete with dust cover

I have a 12 pin flat plus an Anderson plug to charge our camper. Our box trailer just plugs into the lower row of the 12 pin no worries.
