ZF 6HP metal sump pan conversion - which gasket to use? Genuine sump required? Motron

What gasket has been found to work best on the ZF 6HP metal sump pans?

Genuine ZF green gasket? Some of the sellers supplying these also supply the duraphrene black ones with them...
Aftermarket duraphrene black gasket (thick)? Seems to be the most popular option for sale and described as "less chance of future leaks".
Aftermarket steel/rubber gasket? Seems to be most expensive option and "guaranteed no leeks".


Is it work paying double for a genuine ZF sump instead of non-genuine option? Both have drain and fill plugs in them. I think genuine includes proper Torx bolts but aftermarket might just be some other flange head bolts...


Should the mechatronic plug also be purchased at the same time?

Forgot to mention that data sleeve, yes i would replace it at the same time. Personally, i would use the steel/ rubber gasket.

My experience is as follows. Mine has 260,000km on it. Metal sump installed about 50,000 ago. I used the Duraprene gasket and mine is leak free. I did not change the mechatronic sleeve as suggested by Justinc and mine doesn’t leak, but they are known to with age. It wouldn’t hurt to change it.

Advice from a supplier:

“The duruphrene is ok , no leaks but the steel/rubber is the premium one to use.
Don't touch the green genuine ones as they leak when casings are warped.
Up to your budget.”

I used the green gasket when I replaced the plastic sump with a genuine steel ZF pan and filter. I needed to retorque it 3 times to stop it weeping. Definitely will use a flexible gasket next time I replace the filter. Bought a mechatronics sleeve incase but didnt use it and it isnt leaking. Will replace it next time

Duraprene thicker gasket is the one I use and prefer for steel pan upgrade, don’t forget a new filter if changing the fluid. I did mine about 12,000 km ago, absolutely no leaks with Duraprene.

When you buy a steel pan make sure they have a drain hole/plug. When I was looking to buy mine the one I was looking at had no way of draining out the oil from the gearbox. So double check this.

I ended up buying my steel pan direct from ZF in Sydney - was about the same price as those being offered on ebay etc and it comes with all ZF genuine bits not knock offs. I do not know what the gasket is made from but it is genuine and works perfectly.
