good morning all
Ive been looking at buying a discovery for quiet some time but just wondering about a few things

what is the actual difference between a SDV6 and a TDV6?

also what are some things to look at when buying one as Ive got a few mates that have landrovers and they seem to be willing to part with their kids before their discorvery (series 1 and series 2)
yet majority of the time I just get asked if I have deep pockets to keep fixing it.
I'm sure with most cars there is going to be lemons but thought I would ask if people knew of things for me to look at before buying.

Look up the Good Oil forum. Typically there is goodness like you are asking for within it.

Gday and welcome.

Having a D4 will put you in "Permagrin" land.
Like your mates have already alluded to,, get rid of the kids first [wink11], but I dont think they're right about deep pockets,, but maybe I've been lucky. But, I strongly believe that most cars (makes) will have some issues anyway across the board.

I've had three Disco's, D1 V8, D2 V8 and the D4 SDV6 [biggrin]. None of these have cost me a cent in actual fact as far as break downs, or lost time goes, and have never let me down,, "touch wood",, [bigwhistle]
My Defender (2011) did let me down, but I dont believe it was the car, but the dealer :bat:. Misdiagnosis caused me not to have my car for basically three months.
The usual, "look after her and she'll look after you" is the way to go with any piece of machinery, and a little bit of mechanical sympathy goes a long way. I've treated quite a few of my cars with total disrespect and abandon over the years, but when you get home, a wash an' tub, check over for anything vaguely wrong, noises etc, re-tighten or fix them if needs be (sometimes we do break things [bighmmm]) and the world is at whole again. Stupidity in driving actions of course, will always bring one unstuck.

The SDV6 has a little more power than the TDV6 from factory, but I think you can spend a bit of coin to upgrade. Having said that, I've never heard anyone say the TD was lacking in power.

These are extremely capable cars straight off the showroom floor with standard tyres even, as a couple of my mates will attest to. They are fuel efficient and comfy on both long hauls and in the bush,,, worth every penny, which is why I can't understand why they do not "rule the road" so to speak, over Toyota etc,, but lets not go there.

Good luck with your decision.

Back to the OP's question, which often pops up on here.

Up until MY12,TDV6 was 2.7L engine, similar, but not identical to engine in D3.It was modified to solve a few issues, for the D4.HAd the 6 speed auto.
After that it was a lower powered 3.0L,with 8 speed auto.

SDV6 was always the high output 3.0L engine, which was available for the complete model run, although it was named differently at times, and some specs changed slightly. It originally ran the six speed auto, then after around MY12,also had the 8 speed.

As for repairs, the vehicles are generally reliable, but need to be service correctly by a good mechanic that specialises in them.

Maintenance costs are relatively high,timing belts,brakes,suspension arms,air suspension issues,etc.

There are differences of opinions as to whether they all came with EAS.
My opinion is yes they all came with it(AUS spec),unless there is a special order or personally imported vehicle around.

I’ve has D1 D2 D3 and now SDV6 D4.

the last two D3 D4, I bought privately at the end of a lease so car was dealer serviced and full history.
both cars good value and faultless.

”permagrin since owning the D3”

can be serviced by DIY and a diagnostic tool is handy in case of electron gremlins but not neccassary.

if your cruisin or bruisin this is the car for you.
