View Full Version : Front windscreen sun shade to suit D3/4

Anyone identified an alternative source for a front windscreen sun shade to suit the Discovery 3/4 front windscreen? Land Rover lists on for the Discovery 4 (part numberVPLFY0068) but it's about AUD $200.00 which seems ridiculously excessive. The front windscreen on these seems to be far too larger for the generic type from Repco/Super Cheap Auto etc.

I bought one for my RRS from Supercheap the other day - $8 and covers the windscreen perfectly.

Solarscreen would custom make you one....would be more than $8 but less than $200

I have the full set for my defer, not cheap but do a good job.

I purchased a "large" vehicle size cheapie (10 bucks on special) from an auto store and cut 6 inches off the top with a pair of scissors.
Been going ok for some time now.(couple of years)

I have a silvered spring steel wire twist up job that we used in the wife's Tarago before we sold that. The Tarago windscreen is larger than the D4's.

SunScreen fits perfectly and "folds" into a dinner plate size when not in use, and lives in the passenger seat pocket. Pretty sure it came from one of the autostores.

I have used these on all of my cars (D1, D4, Hyundai i30, Mazda MX-5, etc etc). The standard one you get from Repco (or wherever you shop for generic stuff). The same as pictured above.
They work really well - in fact the D4 is probably the best fit out of all of my current cars. Folds away quickly, and I normally shove it down the side of one of the front seats.

Interestingly, the i30 screen must have a much larger glass area, as the sunscreen doesn't fit as well on it. I expect it's the rake/angle of the glass, so although a smaller car it has larger glass area.

Not much to look at, but really practical and very cheap! :-)

I find the shades that go inside the car are pretty pointless as once the heat it through the glass it is inside - I use external ones and my current external one covers the entire windscreen and as stated was $8 at supercheap.

It’s not so much the heat as let’s be honest some heat is most welcome down here in Tassie. It’s more the damage the direct sunlight does on the interior trims - especially down here it’s particuarly UV harsh.

Oh please - Tassie has the lowest level of UV in Australia.

I have provided dimensions to Drifta who have started making external ones in canvas with a thermal internal layer. Check their website or FB for details. The dimensions we used mean that the screen will also cover the plastic cowl below the windscreen, which is notorious for getting badly damaged by the sun.

No word yet on timing as they are developing them for many vehicles and perhaps the D4 is lower priority.

A slight deviation to the OP but I think useful information. I use a generic sunshade on the inside of the front window and when in Canberra early in the year had that run of 40deg days. On 2 separate occasions I had a fault generated from the Auto Headlight sensor due to overtemp. I reset with my IIDtool and no harm done as far as I can tell. My sunshade has a "U" shapped cutout that allows it to go around the mirror/headlight sensor but it certainly gets verrrrry :firedevil: hot up there, I think I will be looking for the external type before next summer.

Didn't use my dimensions so it doesn't cover the cowl below the windscreen so I am inquiring about a custom version.

Can anyone advise: how different is an L319 and L320 windscreen dimensionally? I'd guess the width would be pretty similar?

Thanks for the tip Scott. It will last the life of the vehicle!

I've just ordered the Drifta one and also the US one.
I figure I'll use the Drifta when camping, and the US one in shopping centers etc where it can't be nicked.
Going to the US in May and will collect it over there.
I do love this forum!

That's all I have been using for about 5 years now. It does the job and if it ever does get damaged / lost - I'll just buy another one. We have two of them - one on my D4 and the other on the wife's Camry. Can't see the point in spending any more.

I just received my new Drifta sun shade.
Heavy, insulated canvas with great edging and inserts on the wings to stop thieves from pulling it away from your door sills.
It’ll outlast the vehicle. Exactly what I’ve come to expect from Drifta products.
Highly recommended.

The spring wire units internal or Drifta external units look like the way to go.

I have a standard inside folding one that works fine and took awhile to find. Most are either too short for the width, or if long enough, much too high. The one I have came in two pieces that Velcro together to adjust the height. I discarded the smaller top section as the bottom section is the perfect height. It is plenty wide enough as there is a spare fold on each side.

I will try and find a brand or model and add that to the post.

Hi Scott,
That looks like a vast improvement on the standard cover, should protect the cowl nicely. Can I get the dimensions you used, might also place a custom order.

You mean the black plastic roof trim that sits in the groove where an optional rail for a roof rack would be mounted

Got my custom D4 Drifta windscreen cover with bottom extension today. Looks well made and insulation should reduce cabin temperature considerably. The custom cover appears to be the Drifta standard cover (which stops above the windscreen wipers) and has a bottom extension that folds over the wipers and the cowl. The coverage is very good but my only issues is that the extension, on each side, isn’t quite wide enough and misses 20 mm (x2 = 40mm) at the top and 50 (x2 = 100mm) at the bottom, see pictures. If anyone is thinking about getting one made I would request this extra width for full coverage.
On another note, I think the D3/D4 standard cover which stops above the wipers has relatively poor coverage and really should have been designed to go under the wipers and sit on the top part of the cowl. Wouldn’t be a bad idea to have this also on the custom cover. Then have the extension on top to cover the wipers and cowl completely. https://www.aulro.com/mobile-gallery/283474c15f945c8a0494a2728e0d28f4.jpghttps://www.aulro.com/mobile-gallery/3095085c9244797144927b4ea28760cf.jpghttps://www.aulro.com/mobile-gallery/6ae6ec7a1201d058c1d5fd193c26923e.jpghttps://www.aulro.com/mobile-gallery/71cb94ae520108309e5697da0af47795.jpg

All good points. Why not also
(i) extend the sides to better protect the plastic A pillar trims, and
(ii) if wanting to use the wipers to hold down the blind, still have the longer into under-bonnet extension for sun protection and have mini flaps (and velcro) to accommodate the wiper shafts?

(i) Could be done but there is quite a rise going onto the A pillar and the cover might not sit as flush against the windscreen. Might flap around a bit.

(ii) The door tabs keep the cover in place nicely probably don’t need the wiper blades to hold it. The Drifter standard cover is made of insulation and covered in canvas while the custom extension is just canvas. For better insulation of the cabin just thought it would be good to have the installation section cover the full window. The design is excellent goes in place in a minute.

Tried out my sunshade with the extension yesterday. Brilliant! Would imagine it would also give good protection from hail should the need arise. I can see its worth in the ski resort car parks to quickly clear the screen and wipers of snow build up on departure.

I've just been out doing some measurements, and the rise of the A pillars is minuscule compared to the overall curve of my windscreen.

Having said that, I now have some excellent points to get my own design completed!

I wasn’t entirely happy that the extension piece runs down at 90 degrees from the standard cover when it should have followed the angle of the windscreen (like the standard cover does). As a result, there is a small section of the plastic windscreen cowl exposed on each side.

Update, I got Kaito to sew a triangular section onto each side of the extension to cover these gaps. I discussed with Kaito that it might be a good idea to make this custom extension an option on the Drifta website as I imagine a number of people might be interested. Kaito thought it was a good idea since he’d already received several phone calls about the extension.

Very happy with the result.
