View Full Version : Banded WOLF rims

Morning all,

I am trying to resolve my 130's turning circle. At present I have the old, no hole tubed rims. I am considering having some genuine WOLF rims banded to get a better offset, and better turning circle.

Has anyone got experience with this, or does anyone have recommendations for a super strong (maybe mine spec) aftermarket rim - preference is wolf style.

Cheers.

I thought banding was illegal in Australia - I thought that getting the centre taken out and then put back in with a different offset is legal as far as wheel modifications were concerned or taking the centre out and putting it back in a wider rim was also legal but I thought banding was off limits here.

Good be wrong though.

AFAIK those are the rules in NSW. No banding. When i tried to do it a few years back i was flatly told "Nup I won't do it" by every wheel mob i contacted.

I was chatting to Ben @ APT, his wolf rims have had the centre cut out flipped and re-welded to a bigger off set.

I got a price for 6 but buggered if I can remember the final figure. Wasn’t cheap

Flipping the centre sounds like a good option, anyone know where I could get this done in NSW?

Neales Wheels in Sydney might be able to do it - as will Eastern wheels in melbourne.

Thanks for the advice, I have sent out half a dozen emails to different custom wheel shops, so lets see what comes back.

What are your thoughts if the wheels are modified do i then get hot dip gal followed by powder coat or just sandblast and powder coat? This is my longterm project / forever truck so not concerned with saving a few $$ hear and there - looking for super robust quality and longevity.

Ben @ APT has sorted me out thanks all!

Is your main turning-circle concern for off-road or on-road? I find mine liveable on-road after maxing out the steering stops, but it's sometimes a pain in offroad situations, taking 3 bites at switchbacks or not having the maneouvrability to get around obstacles. I think fiddle brakes would be a good solution.

My main issue is on road - the turning circle is massive. I have soaked the lock stops in WD40, and will give them a go this arvo - at present they are all the way out, although there isn't much clearance between the wheel and the radius arm?!

Adjust the stops until the tyre just clears the arm, it does make a fair bit of difference. I've learnt to live with the turning radius, you certainly have to pick your spot for a U-turn.

Oh, out of interest, what is Rim banding

Where are you located?
I have a set of disco1 Steelers flipped and hot dip galvanised wearing a set of Bridgestone Muds that have done one Cape Trip which I would consider moving on?
PM if interested

For whatever reason, Disco 1 steels are not weight rated for 130's

Yeah they most definitely are
1300kg per wheel
They have a higher rating than stock (slightly less than Wolf)
Definitely okay

Standard 130 rims (wolf) are rated at 2200kg per wheel, pretty sure disco steelies are not legal on a 130 although some people use them. I guess it’s not really a problem if you’re never at gvm?

i found many wolf rims are only rated to 1150kg

some variants are rated higher....

you need to be particular when looking for the right ones

How can you tell, is it a different part number? I’ve heard of new ones that are called ‘wolf’ rims but aren’t stamped with any part numbers I.e. the ANR..... whatever it is.

Check your vehicles axle load rating.
Rear will be usually higher than front.
Divide by 2
Ensure the stamped load rating on wheel is a bigger number.
Simples.

Disco1 Steelies are load rated at 1300kg
So give an axle load rating of 2600kg
Far in excess of any defender axle load rating ever

It’s simples

And that’s just to keep everything legal schmegal
Look at the construction of a D1 Steelie compared to all other defender rims but the HD Wolfs
and you’ll feel safe.

Don’t even get started on running tubeless on tubed rims ;)

Well now I want to get you started because I'm running tubeless on an old tubed rim and have had no issues and have never read of anyone having any issues.

It’s been bandied about on Aulro for as long as I’ve been a member!
I was making a snide comment!

My old 130 did a few hundred thousand Kay’s throughout Cape York and the Gulf
Running tubeless on tubed rims. Normal dirt pressure of 25 front 30-50 rear and down to 15 for beach launching etc

Never had a problem

But some would say if you run a tubeless rim without tubes you will immediately roll your defender into a busload of haemophiliac nuns and babies?

To help with the turning circle of my Defender I fitted King wheels Terra 0 offset steel rims from Bob Jane Tmart, $114 each. If you buy King rims also use their wheel nuts as the tapered is different to LR nuts. A great improvement in the turning circle. I can now safely do u turns!

And it was a lot cheaper than changing the offset of Wolf or Disco rims.

The 265/75 R 16 BFG KO2 tread just sits in the flare.

Cheers Eric
