Oil+filter+bio-diesel

After all this talk about what to use I got excited and changed the oil+filter.

And followed most of the helpful hints about how not to get covered in oil.

Just two things. The sump plug is directly above the axle on my 130, so it ended up being precarious funnel and jug. Second is that the milk bottle trick is excellent, just need to unscrew the filter real fast, if you do it slow oil starts spilling out the top and somehow avoids the milk bottle completely.

Now I've also just run a couple of tanks of bio-diesel and am expecting it to dirty up the oil pretty quick.

How soon should I replace the oil filter? And is there any point to changing the filter between oil changes? I'm a lazy bugger, and an $8 filter change and another half a litre of oil sounds a hell of a lot easier and cheaper than another load of fancy oil.

Or is that not the done thing?

Hi Si,

It will be the fuel filter that will need changing if you've been running Bio because it cleans out the accumulated crud in the fuel tank and lines.

I remember reading somewhere that it was fuel filter replacing with bio-diesel, then couldn't work out a sensible reason why. I'm not too worried about fuel filters at the moment, since I had the tank cleaned recently and the fuel filter is pretty new.

I thought all of the crud would collect in the engine oil.

Hi Simon,
Speaking as a (comparatively) long term biodiesel user I can say without fear of giving you wrong info that it is definitely the fuel filter you would be changing.

There won't be rubbish in the biodiesel if it has been made to spec so if you have had your tank cleaned recently I am betting that you will most likely be OK. I don't know if you had your fuel lines cleaned too but if not then you might find a little dinodiesel varnish crud coming out of there but I wouldn't be too worried about it if I was you. That is what fuel filters are for!
