View Full Version : LR have done it again - A/C drains onto automatic transmission!

Spent the evening replacing the original plastic automatic transmission sump with a metal one. Started the engine to keep refilling it and after pumping for a while I realise that fluid is running down, but it doesn't seem to be enough to be full enough and the fluid comes in a fast flow for a second or two then a pause and repeat. It's also coming out on the other side and I think bugger the gasket is leaking! Fill plug back in and kill the engine to take a look.

Nope, on closer inspection the fluid is running all the way down the gearbox - WTF!?! Keep inspecting up and bang - A/C drain tubes either side above the gearbox. For anyone else that owns/has owned a D2 with the ZF automatic this was the cause of some plaguing issues and yet Land Rover have gone and done it all over again!

Better than a leaking gasket I suppose. Tip for anyone else refilling in the future, ensure your A/C is off while you do it!

Haha, just noticed that myself a couple of days ago while checking the trans level. Thought i had a leak at first too

Is it possible to extend the drains so they are out of the way?

But unlike the D2, it is not an issue with the D3. if you cannot tell the difference between transmission fluid and water - turn the A/C off.
