HI i hav a 85 range rover that im thinking of cutting into a 90 and fitting one of the bodys i have onto it .

1 is it still legal to do

2 would i b better off making a 100"

3 or would it be better to graft the hangers and diffs to the series chassis

4 i want to keep the v8 its fuel injected too

Any help will be appreciated

1) Yes - but like anything these days it has to comply to rules and regulations eg relevant ADRs (easer to use an older RR and a new series, as this covers all ADRS) but all work still needs to be engineered

2) Depends what you want to use it for. 90' is great for tight trails, with no really steep stuff, 100' about perfect for everything (upto about 36/37' tyres). 100'is standard RR, thereforse using standard parts making spares easier to come by. BTW - a 90 isnt really a 90 (Its about 92 - 93)

3) This is easier to engineer due to it being termed as a 'modifacation', whereas the 100' is a 'ReBodied vehicle', more legal loopholes to jump through.

4) Again depends on what base you want to use. RR is standard, but if you want to coil a series, then the V8 should be easy

If you go for 100inch rangie chassis you will need to modify a 109 series body to fit, the rear section, that is the tub will need to be shortened about 225mm in the front of the wheel arch, I have done this conversion in the past and about to do another in a week or so. If you want some pics I will send them to you. Will help if you have not done this before.

Happy to help, is quite involved to this but the end product is offroad abilty with a light truck. The body mod is fairly straight forward, the chassis work is a bit involved. will send you some info via email.

You guys need to wtch a Discovery series called "A 4x4 is born" they convert an 86 rangie in to a 100" LandRover... and they take no shortcuts!!

You need to track down a DVD series called a "4x4 is Born"

Its a very detailed (15 hours), entertaining and informative video production (originaly made for Discovery Channel) on exactly what you are considering - making a range rover hybrid using a modified range rover chassis and series or 110/90 body work. Lots of good ideas, inspiration and tips even if you decide not to do it exactly the same way he did.

I would go with 100" wheel base - apart from not having to cut and shorten the rangie chassis in a critical structural area, 100" is about the ideal off road wheelbase anyway.

I also have a lot of photos of my 100" hybrid, PM me with your email address if you would like some.

Ok the boss has spoken, I am rechassising :?: My old race truck it is 100 leaf spring ATM. So it is now getting a rangie chassis, Starting this wek sometime so I will post pics as it goes. As far as body goes it is allready modified so I can only give distructions on this part of it.

I can confirm the "4x4 is Reborn" DVD is tops.

Was thinking about doing the same but on reflection what does a Series or defender body add to the project - Range Rovers are cheap and the same suspension mods can be done as if it was a hybrid with far less work and engineering. The other aspect was that RTA tech standards have indicated that they frown in newer cars that have been demodernized eg a 90s rangie with a series body but look favaouably on an older car being moderised - eg a series body with later safety mods like a rangie chassis (is the glass half full or is it have empty?). The issue becomes vehicle ident - is a 90s rangie with a 70s body a 90s or a 70s car - I have been given mixed messages from the RTA on this.

So it is clear that any such work should be done not only with an engineer in mind but in discussion with the RTA.

The reduced center of gravity (and overall weight) is very noticeable off-road. I also like the ability to hose out the interior. Some also think series panels look better than a rangie......others simply want to build something 'unique'

Mine was/is registered as a Series 3 which had been converted to coil springs and a V8 with a corresponding modification plate. You may have to restamp the chassis number to achieve this (I'm not saying I did or that you should.......)
