View Full Version : Plastic Storage Boxes - Anyone Other than Bunnings

Hi All,

I'm after some decent plastic storage boxes for home but also useful for camping/use in the car.

Bunnings have some good ones which stack well (60L and 30L and 15L but cant find them on the website - might have stopped selling them) but have a lot which are pretty bad. The plastic is quite brittle and cracks easily. They have some decent hevby duty crates but they don't stack as they have curved lids.

Any one know where else is a good place to look. I'm in Sydney Inner West.

Cheers

The Reject Shop sells good boxes of various quality - the black ones are UV stable but the clear ones will breakdown in UV after couple of years.

IMHO Bunnings is gradually turning into just another large-company owned junk shop driven by bean-counters.

Their sole interest would seems to be to sell stuff like you have identified with the only intent to maximise profits.

For example there are lots of carpentry and plumbing repair items they no longer carry because there is only "limited" demand. Suppliers bid for shelf space and hence we see junk on sale.

I would think that a supplier that serves business needs could be a better source. For example, the fishing industry uses lots of more rugged plastic containers which they seem to treat fairly roughly.

Expect to pay more than you would @ "bunnings"

We've had good luck with Sistema brand containers from Woolworths. They're stackable and pretty robust. Bonus is that they're available in exactly the right size (height, width and depth) for our camper.

Try NQR. I purchased a dozen australian made plastic storage boxes with lids from there for $5.00 each a couple of weeks back. They are semi-flexible plastic (not rigid) so shoudln't break the first time you look at them sideways like the chinese **** offerings elsewhere.

I have bought several at Big W.

Very Durable but the plastic clamps on the lid can break if you are not careful.

Same issue. I have dozens of broken ones from Bunnings.
I get them from Officeworks in Victoria. They are much sturdier.

Our local "The Bolt Place" has a good collection of crates and containers. I think the 30/40/50 lt black plastic crates come with lids, are UV resistant and are made by Nally. I would imagine the tool and industrial suppliers would be much the same.

For durable bomb proof boxes with lids
Can’t go past a Nally
Lid clips on and with a zip tie or wire twitch will stay rain proof

Find your local fish co-op / pro fisho supply / butcher supply joint

Not the cheapest but certainly the best

Even the white / translucent ones are 100% UV stable and will last for 20 plus years

I used to work for Nally way back when they were called Nally.

I got out just before viscount took them over..

They are one of the better made plastic crates that WILL last for years, plus they have different sizes/shapes for your needs.

Found a place last night while searching on where to buy them..."equip2go.com.au", have branches in most states.

Good luck with watch ever you buy.

I've been using Gomo boxes for the last ten years and they're still going strong having been mistreaded all around Australia. They're not cheap but they stack and although they do not have rubber seals I've found them to be reasonably dustproof. They have small drain holes in the bottom and I sealed these with mastic. They come in two sizes. I chose the smaller and have 12, stacked in three piles of four and locked into place with pillows wedged between the top box and the roof liner. Works well. They've never mmoved, even on the roughest tracks.

Costco Routinely sell folding boxes of various sizes that stack flat (or panel into cubes)

good plastic and the various sizes nest up well,

As a box they fit and sit on top of each other,

the boxes fit in a sequence, 2 mediums sit exactly on 1 large, and the smalls fit 2 on a medium or 4 on a large.

theres a wierdo size box that fits 3 on a large and across 2 mediums...

I had to match boxes that I’d got from Bunnings. Like everything there they seem to change with the wind. These are the units they used to sell about 7ish years ago.

Stackable Tote Boxes - Richmond Wheel & Castor Co (https://www.richmondau.com/product-category/plastics-storage/stackable-tote-boxes-plastics-storage/)

Found them to be pretty sturdy. Made in OZ , one fault that they have is you can’t reverse a boat trailer over them

I am with the Nally bins. I have some I have been using for 40 years for carrying dive gear and camping gear. Looking a bit scratched and battered but still going strong.

Same as these

Crate Heavy Duty 52L - CR52 (https://www.theplasticman.com.au/collections/frontpage/products/crate-heavy-duty-52lt)

Also used these with lids for years for keeping stuff clean and dry in the back of a ute. Bullet proof.

Originally used the same type of box for carting and storing scuba gear - if a weight belt dropped in them couldn’t break them nothing will.

Cheers,

Neil

Hi All,

Thanks for the advice. I ended up getting some nesting storage boxes from Richmond Wheel & Castor Co. Stack & Nest Crates - Richmond Wheel & Castor Co (https://www.richmondau.com/product-category/plastics-storage/stack-nest-crates/)

I went out there to have a look and was tossing up between the nesting and stacking types. What I ended up getting was 3 sets of the larger crates (68L) and 3 sets of the smaller crates (32L). For the price of the 3 nesting crates I would have only got 2 of the stacking crates.

Anyhoo...... I took them home and started to load them up and instantly regretted not getting the stacking type. The taper on the nesting crates has a significant effect on what you can put inside. not so much in volume but the amount of unusable volume at the sides and ends. I went for the nesting type because they 1) were cheaper, and 2) can be stored efficiently when not in use. Stacking crates cant be stored as well.

We live and learn.

How long does it take to assemble the plastic box?
Are the instructions on how to assemble it clear?

It takes longer to walk through the shop, there are no short-cuts. :rulez:

Not a chance I’ll walk through that place ever again...

I don’t mind what they have, just the aweful shopping experience. Thankfully you can order online and not have to be put through the living hell of actually going there...

Spend $2000 at coles & swipe your card & you will get a small plastic storage box for free :Rolling:& I think that includes a vacuum pump as well or maybe you have to pay for that .
