View Full Version : Battery warning fault.

I keep getting this sign popping up on the screen "Low battery, please start engine" even after a night on charge using a Ctek multi stage charger. Stealer recently ran a series of checks and report it as "All OK when tested".
This isn't the first time this has happened. Anyone else had this and if so what was fix? I'm taking it into the stealer tomorrow when they will run the tests again....

Don't see a picture, but could it be the alternator?

Sorry AJ, forgot to add what the warning said and I wasn't even ****ed at the time, so I've edited my post above ..... . Anyway today I put the Ctek on again until it showed the battery as fully charged and the multimeter said 13.56v. Jumped in with smart key in pocket and up came that damn message again!
I'll check it again in the morning to see if the battery is holding the charge or if it's being drained overnight by something.
Cheers.

Forgot to say the vehicle is still under warranty so they can sort it out....... hopefully.

AlanH.Mine was playing up. I got the battery place to do a test. Said it had a bit more life left. Another few weeks I couldn't start at all. Had to put it on the charger on to drive it. Bought a new battery, cost an arm and leg but starts easily. Kept the old one to play with as it will probably work on the boat winch.

Hi Alan, have you tried doing a Hard Reset?

Tim,just a bit off topic,but what battery would you suggest for a 2.7 D4?

Mine is 5 yrs old, genuine JLR,and getting a bit tired.

Have the traxide SC80 kit as well.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Paul and as you got 5 years out of the battery you have, buy the same again.

You will probably have to do some searching to get the same, but DO NOT BUT ONE THROUGH A LAND ROVER DEALERS.

It will probably be about half the price if you can get one elsewhere.

Hi Alan, have you tried doing a Hard Reset? No I haven't but the stealer is checking it today. But before I do the first start of the day I'm going to check the battery voltage. Yesterday afternoon after taking the Ctek off it showed 13.56v and still that warning cameup. Hopefully it is just a glitch which a hard reset will fix. Thnx for the tip.
Cheers.

Having the “Low Battery, Start Motor” message continue to appear after fully charging the cranking battery is a common occurrence, but what and see what the dealer comes up with as a fix.

NOTE this is not a problem, just an annoyance.

Probably not relevant in the Disco’s but on my L405 that same error was to do with the small (70ah) accessory battery in the back had failed.

Have you checked the earth?

Checked the voltage after charging last night, 13.56v. This morning down to 12.60v. Off to the stealer where the foreman ran several checks and eventually announced the battery was on it's way out.
New battery installed and away I went.
Approx. 30 months doesn't seem much of a long life for a battery as big as the originals are in LRs.
Thnx. for the comments.

Hi Alan and if your battery was showing 12.60 in the morning, that's at over 95% SoC.

I suspect they replaced a good battery, but you are laughing.

Good one.

As Drivesafe said, 12.6 is almost fully charged. Readings over that are a float charge, but put the battery under load and it would drop back to about 12.6.

Mine also lasted around 30 months & the start car message came up.

We weren't near a dealer at the time so I had to stump up the cost of a new one.
Although I have had a Traxide system fitted since the car was new the battery still failed & if it wasn't for the Traxide, I would never have got it started when the message popped up.

Same. My last AGM lasted four years before giving errors. I’m hoping with regular CTEK charges this one might last longer again.

As per my previous post, mine is 5 yrs old,and gets regular charging with the Ctech.
Looking at the date code, its actually 6 yrs old,but has been in the vehicle for 5.

I also have a switch on the SC80 earth wire so i can turn it off and charge each battery separately, and reduces the current drained from the battery by the SC80.Our vehicle is not used a lot at times as we have company vehicles.

The D4 also 'wakes up',whenever a door is opened,or unlocked,so the sitting voltage of the battery is lower for a few minutes, then it eventually creeps up and stabilises.

Im on the 2nd battery in mine I believe, the oem Bosch lasted >5years, at least it was a genuine bosch in there when it was changed out. The car does do a lot of long trips, and I don't have too many devices hooked up. No dual battery system etc. I replaced it with a century I think, matched by the local battery-world people.

Have had no trouble whatsoever since replacing, the reason I replaced it was that it started to take longer to crank and fire, plus after a trip to Karajini NP, we had a few mornings where it would not crank at all.

I think 5years is about the norm, considering these batteries are under pretty arduous conditions.

I've kept the oem Bosch and charge it up occaisionally using a solar panel or 240v bench charger, I use it to run 12v appliances.
