Owned one for 5 years. Miss it. All the fruit. Great engine (I changed resonators for a bit more note). Thirsty tho.

Only prob I ever had was water pump. And LCA’s (which is typical)

Range is an issue with small tank and thirsty engine.

Bottom line I prefer my diesel but do miss the V8 burble all that fruit (and the E-Diff)

Rarely saw > 300kms to a tank (mainly urban driving)

On highway was marginally worse than diesel

Towing economy was an oxymoron

Any fundamental issues? Or fixes that are needed for reliable.

I’d look at the L322 post 2006 v8 options. The SC versions are amazingly speced up, even compared to the D4 v8 which had a lot of fruit.

The big drawback is the D4 and L322 V8s all got the ZF 6 speed V8 (which is very nice). The later diesels got the ZF 8 speed (which is better).

On the 5.0 NA & SC versions I’ve read the valve guides need replacing in some cases.

I think the 4.4 v8 and 5l v8 motors in D3 and 4 have issues with cam chain adjusters and then requiring replacement chains and adjusters...but at least it's a full front off not body off job to do a turbo o the td's. Having said that I have a feeling doing other things on the petrol 8 can involve body off.

Was the 4.4 a BMW engine?

If so it had well documented issues with the cooling system, mainly plastic parts failing.

I thought the 4.4 in the D3 and L322 were the same ie M62.motor but perhaps not based on this

Nice Pedro. That was piqued my interest. If you could get a 4.4 cheap enough to justify having 6k or so burning a hole in your back pocket for the inevitable auto replacement/rebuild and were prepared for.tbe costs of front arms in particular then what a great machine.

Cheers

In the L322 the pre 2006 4.4 V8 is a BMW motor. The BMW motor would now be quite old and yes VANOS can be an issue.

From MY2006 (Carsales can be inaccurate so be careful) the 4.4 is the Ford/Jag version. This motor was also in the early D3 and RRS. This motor is regarded as one of the best fitted to a Land Rover for reliability. Next is the Jag 4.2 SC, slightly more complicated but very reliable and much more power with similar economy. The L322 and RRS got the 4.2 SC.

The plastic guides are an issue in some 5.0 NA and SC motors, but otherwise seem ok and much more powerful and more economical. The D4 got the NA version.

I have 4.4 V8 D3 MY2006, I’m the third owner, I’ve LCA replaced when I got it, at 175K. I’ve since had the radiator replaced due to rusty connections and replaced a misfiring injector. I’ve had the auto trans pan upgraded and auto serviced. I put in a long range fuel tank which was a bit of a drama because the OA tank I used didn’t have the docs to fit it in the V8. It fitted and works well giving me a range of 8-900km mixed urban and about 1000km highway touring. It’s the cheapest car I ever bought and the best :). I just have to watch my right foot :) I have the NSW fuel check app and try to fill up at the bottom of the P98 price cycle.

I have the 5.0l V8 & love it:)

2011 model.

Awesome car.

I mostly drive it......whenever I can :) but avoid heavy traffic if I can.

The stopping & starting is a real fuel drain.

On a long trip I'd get around 10.5 -12 l/100 but in general weekly driving I'm averaging around 13-14l/100.

I drive quite sedately usually but I don't muck around getting to the speed limit.

I don't have to worry about turboes or any of those other expensive diesel issues and with the centre muffler replaced with straight through jobby it sounds awesome.

The video attached is going from no centre to the straight through.

Enjoy
