Quick question, are the centrally located front and rear loops on the D4 recovery points or tie down points? Just read the manual and it says something about not using them for offroad recovery, but I have a vague recollection of discussing this with the dealer when we bought it and I'm sure he said they were recovery points?
Cheers

Recovery as far as I'm concerned.

Successfully used the front one to winch us and a 2500kg AOR Q+ out of a very large bull dust hole on the way out of Chambers Pillar last year. All went very well

The front and rear tow points are not rated but are considered strong enough.

I think you'll find they are rated, they are rated by Land Rover to 30mph sudden stop, both front recovery point and rear tow point, there's a video demonstrating it on here somewhere.

Hi,
Doing the Simpson desert in Sept and trying to get advise on installing recovery points on the D4. Cant seem to get anyone who knows. Spoke to several LR dealers (including Ritters) and also ARB but nothing. One guys said to get these, TFD3PRK which are made by Terrafirma but they don't look very strong to snatch from. Anyone had any experience with these? Here is the link. WINCH RECOVERY POINT KIT - TFD3RPK - Terrafirma – Ocean Car Parts (https://www.oceancarparts.com/products/tfd3rpk-terrafirma)
Looking for any advise anyone can offer.
Many thanks, Roland

What is wrong with the front and rear recovery points the D4 already has - plenty strong enough.

I don’t know how they go with shock loading during a recovery, but static loads seems to be just fine.... [biggrin]

The stock points work just fine - as long as you haven’t done anything to damage them - always check any point before use regardless.

I’ve used standard front point a number of times, including in sand with snatch straps.
i’ve had it checked recently and all good.
In Simpson you should be fine, momentum is your friend.
Are you towing?
I’m going thru Simpson in next couple weeks towing Patriot Camper.
Travelling south along Hay River to Poppels and east to Birdsville.

That video has nothing to do with the 'recovery points' as they are not used in that demonstration which is about the strength of the chassis.
The brackets at either end are bolted direct to the chassis not the recovery points which are bypassed.

I’ve snatched my old D3 which was fully bogged in mud including having a 6 inch under mud sawn off root lodged under the bullbar that we did not know about. Broke snatch 2 x brand new straps (8k & 6.5k) and eventually took to double pully winch - only realized the root was there after the bullbar started deforming.
Point of long story is the front center recovery point did not blink - rock solid.

I’d love to see the damage from some of those tests!

Photo 1 - initial bog - we just could not get it to snatch backwards and going forward was not an option either as the bog just got worse heading in that direction. When we got bogged the front of the car slid down to the right on the camber and that's where the root jammed behind the bulbar. We had no idea it was there the right hand side of the car was up against the mud bank. We tried to check wheels, underbody we just could not find what was holding it and swimming in that crap was not fun . Right hand drivers side was flooded with that lovely WA smelly bog mud and we were over it. Eventually winched from another vehicle with snatch block, which almost stalled before the root snapped.
Photo 2 - Side view of reshaped bulbar
Photo 3 - This is a picture looking down the right hand side of the car where the root jammed behind the bulbar in the wheel arch.
Anyhow - many years ago and lesson learned.
