defender air con any one fitted a filter to the cabin

1998 300 tdi defender.

After removing the in cabin air conditioning unit to over haul it. I was flabbergasted how much crap was in the Evaporator. Has anyone fitted some type of filter to reduce the crap sucked up from the passenger floor. Interested in possible solutions. Baz

i would suggest that anything adding more resistance to the airflow in one of those things could make it's performance less than satisfactory. they're not very good at the best of times.

I put a filter on top of the mudguard on my Puma, it works a treat and has stopped a huge amount of dirt going into the evaporator.
The filters come with fine and course filters if you want .

Any chance of a Photo. Not familiar with pumas. do the aircon draw from the floor area like the defender ones ?

You can also use those disposable filters for window type air conditioning units (We use 3M) and measure out the size of the hole to over and cut it up, you should have more than one after you cut it down to size. Use a thin double side tape (again we used 3M as it was available and we had no issues with them in the past). Put the tape onto the outer perimeter and stick on to cover the hole. Replace as necessary.

We tried traditional cabin filters before but found that they impeded and reduced airflow significantly. This 3M solution keeps the airflow the same while filtering out dirt and nasties from going onto and into the cooling coil.

I hope this helps.

By the way, this solution is primarily for the intake inside, at the bottom of the dash. Mine is a Puma so YMMV. You can also do it for the external intake provided you have a snow cowl or something as I doubt this solution will be OK with getting wet.

The cabin filter i have is a D44 Defender cabin air filter. You should find it easily at Devon 4x4.
The puma draws its fresh air in from the top of the passenger guard hole.
The filter keeps the dust out before it enters.

The 3M filter with /double sided tape sounds great. There are also a large range of industrial air vent/filter materials available but most would come in very large rolls. Clarke Rubber may also have some of the air filter foam.

Not a filter, but I fitted a snow guard to my air intake which keeps out water and some dust.
