View Full Version : D4 - how to replace Electronic Park Brake switch in centre console?

Anyone able to advise the process for the centre console dismantle in order to access and replace the EPB switch?

Getting lots of faults from it and IIDTool advises that it’s the switch that’s failed. Have already checked the mechanical side hence purchased a new switch to replace with now.

D3 is an easy 5 minute job.

D4 is a mission if you haven't done one before.

Cant help with what actually has to be done, because i ended up getting my Indie to do it while doing a service.

Quite a bit has to be pulled apart.Guys that have done them before easily do it in half an hour.

Yes, there are, such as < YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZHlqi0F8Pk) >, but sadly it's not as simple as pulling up the centre console as that still doesn't allow you remove to the EPB switch as it's screwed in place from the top down so needs to be completely pulled apart to access and remove:

But it looks to me like there are six or so torx screws holding the parts of the lower centre console together. I'm going to remove them and see if I can split it to access.

What I have found so far is:
1. Remove the lower centre console as per YouTube videos
2. Remove four torx screws holding the Terrain Response/suspension height/Hi/Low range control panel in place.
3. Remove four torx screws holding the side padding trim on the EPB switch side only.
4. Slightly push out the shifter panel by releasing the two tabs.
5. You should now be able to jiggle out the tray infant of the EPB switch as it's soft and flexible.

150537

6. Now you can remove the EPB securing screw.
7. There's a tab holding the EPB switch in place. But despite lifting this with a screw driver, I still cannot push the switch out - there's only room to push it towards the front of the car. I cannot see anything else holding it in place though - I don't know what I am missing here!?!

EDIT: got it. You've got to push the front (where the screw hole is) up while sliding it forward as it sits in a slight recess.

Does the GAP tool differentiate between the brake pedal switch and the console switch ?

Pretty sure the console switch has a canbus connection and the pedal switch doesn't but I haven't checked wiring diagram to confirm.

ScottI would think other way around, on a D3 it is.

Prompted me to check the wiring diagram ....

Pedal Switch is wired directly to the ECM
Console Switch is wired directly to the Park Brake Module
Neither switch has canbus wires to itself.

Both modules have canbus connections so I guess that makes it feasible for either to report a fault status via its respective module.

Cheers,
Scott

Yes i was thinking about it before and both will have canbus connection as both throw up codes when they fail, i know on mine i have occasionally had a brake switch circuit failure message in GAP but i clear it and carry on.
New switch is in the console for when it dies for good.

Hey mate if you want more practice I can send you all of our ones to do...😬

As I understand the switches connect to an ECU. The ECU’s communicate their messages over the canbus between each other. Whether the individual signal state of each switch require being transmitted on the bus is I guess the question.

Perhaps I don't really understand the question as the console switch is for the Electronic Park Brake and the brake pedal operates the vehicles hydraulic brakes - two different systems. The error on the IIDTool specified the EPB switch was at fault. As I am not aware of another EPB switch than that on the console I replaced it and it's resolved the issue.

Happy to! I reckon I can knock them out pretty fast now that I know exactly what's required and how.

Can't recall the exact wording but it was certainly clear that it's the handbrake switch at fault and not the foot brake.

Interestingly, our second D4 has come up with a fault handbrake switch at almost similar km's to when the first one did it. For those in the 165,000 - 180,000km zone consider that you may be effected by this at some point too.
In both cases the switch has still functioned to activate the handbrake but has not disengaged it or been intermittent.
Replacement part number for ours has been LR071958.

You just saved me a bucket load of headaches!!! Did the replacement 2014 D4 in about 20 min! Thankyou

Thanks for this thread, people.

I've got a park brake issue - multiple pulls to activate (150 000 kms, FYI). The curious thing is that diagnostic tools can't communicate with the brake either (discovered all this on the back of installing a new actuator and not being able to initiate the bed in procedure).

Before I go and replace the EPB switch (ok I'll probably do that anyway), is there anything else in the comms/electrical system known to cause issues?

Many thanks
