12V switched power

I wish to mount a radio in my MY16D4. can someone suggest a source of 12V inside that is OK to use for a radio or to power a relay for a radio. Do not want to upset anything. I have power from the second battery but want the radio to turn off with the car. TIA

I suggest that you fit an add-a-fuse to an appropriate fuse in the passenger compartment fuse panel, located behind the glove box. There is an ignition fuse but probably better to choose an accessory-powered fuse which stays powered for a short while after the ignition is switched off.

The D3s came ready from the factory to take the centre console fridge and the 12V supply outlet lives in there ready to go. It is powered only when ignition is on. Imagine D4s the same.

Same for the rear 12V socket outlet which was not fitted as standard on the SE models.

I mounted our UHF under the passenger front seat and used the 12v switched power intended for the OEM fridge in the center console.

The only caveat I would think is that the wires diameter is small which might be an issue for higher current draw. However I have had no issues running the GME XRS 370C with a stated current draw of 1.5amps.

Could I suggest you do NOT want it to turn off with the car? I often use the radio when the car is off and it would be annoying to have it turn off after 10mins when the whole car shuts down. I wish I could do this for the car audio system as well, but that's another story.

In theory it sounds good but i use my hand held if out of the car, you could wire it directly to an aux. battery if you have one.

Hi,
I have taken power for accessories from the back of the Traxide relay.
This is fed to a fuse box under the cubby via a relay.
The relay is switched via a SPDT with off in the middle.
Pin 1 comes from the supply from the Traxide, pin 2 comes from the ignition and common goes to the relay.
This gives me a supply that will not over draw the starter battery.
If the camper is on the tray, there is a deep cycle battery to supply power if the Traxide decides the starting battery is getting low and disconnects.
This means I can choose the accessories to switch off with the ignition or stay on until the starter battery is getting down a bit and then turn off, or if the camper is on, they stay on and run from the camper battery.

Yes, mine also comes off the Traxide, so the starting battery is protected if I forget to turn it off.

I saw this switch panel for the D3's in the LRO Int'l May 2019 issue, it replaces the ashtray, they also do a smaller one for the D4 centre console between the seats.

I did exactly as Graeme described, used fuse #21, accessory-powered. The negative was earthed via a chassis factory screw at the bottom right of the glovebox. Very easy jobhttps://www.aulro.com/mobile-gallery/2195cd94d0d19c532bde143879dbc261.jpg

Radios (comms) should be wired directly to the battery for best performance.
