View Full Version : Help with stuffed rear wheel bearing

Noticed some metal-tometal sounds from the rear right wheel, the axle had a few mm play up and down. I then took of the wheel and (Salsbury I think :?: Its got a large 6 sided end on outside. ) axle and found steel shavings in the beering grease. I am short of money at the moment but I would also like to gain experience working on my Fender for planned desert trips next year, so I need advice from more experienced people than myself:
1/ Is this a Salsbury axle I am deeling with?
2/ Can I replace the bearing myself? - I have moderate ability and done so long time ago on a Holden HT.
3/ Is it likely that more than the bearing is stuffed? and I should get a mechanic to check it?
4/ If I can/should do the job myself how do I found out the correct bearing to get and who from?

Any help would be appreiciated and I appologise in advance for my basic mechanical knowledge.

Don't apologize, that's what this forum's for. Wheel bearing changes are easily within most people's ability.

Get a hub nut spanner from 4WDs in Blackburn South (about $8). Acquire a wheel bearing set (inner and outer), locking washer, inner hub seal, and a drive member gasket if you're a purist. Shop around for wheel bearing prices - they vary a lot!

Look at the downloads section on this site for the manual which suits, read it carefully and then just do it! Be careful to mount the inner hub seal just below the inner rim of the hub so that it doesn't chop out on the collar edge.

You're not quite a virgin, so it should take you about two hours.

Basic and pretty simple.

HI also make sure you put the hub oil seal in the right way round. the new seals in the uk have "this way to hub" printed on it.
thats the cup side of the seal towards the bearing.
Ive seen so many round the wrong way!!!

while in bits have a quick look at your stub axle for corrosion pitting, mine was pitted and could never get a good oil seal when i replaced my bearings.
