i wouldn't hang by the neck

but on the other hand... there is a rumor going around about a special order through M.R. Automotive there is brisbane for a new Defender 130 with the TDV6 in it and the 6 speed automatic installed. Supposedly only around the 60k mark https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Still waiting to see if true or not... worth the xtra $10k and 6 month wait if correct https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

There is 'revised' Defender due later in the year. It gets a Ford 4 cylinder diesel bored out to 2.7 litres. Apparently you will be able to have the choice of a ZF 6 speed auto or manual 8)

The TDV6 is not coming to any factory Defender anytime soon (2010).

The reason for the new engine is because the TD5 can nolonger meet EU emissions.

There is nothing wrong with the TD5, except the fact that it was put in during BMW ownership and ford want to erase that all together. As a result the TD4 is also getting the flick from the Freelander and the TD6 from the rangie. Ford have said it wont meet emission standards but when BMW had these engines preped for use in land rover vehicles they were planned as a long time unit and further tightening of emission laws were thought about so that is codswollop, simply put Ford want to use engines from within the PAG.

As for the ford 4cyl engine its based on the TD from the Ford Mondeo and as Noddy said will be bored out to 2.7L from 2.2L.

As for the new fender some people say 08 some say 2010 i think land rover is keeping a lid on this as they know it will be as bigger launch as anything. Matt

WRONG AGAIN ACE - the TD5 is and was a Land Rover motor!!!

The only reason TD5 is being dropped is because it doesnt pass EURO4? polution levels.

As all Land Rover will be built in the UK - closure of Brazil and South Africa this will make production simpler!!!

Ford should use the current transit motor, its a ripper.

I thought the new engine was to be a Transit engine. But Noddy's information also sounds correct.

Whatever the story, the Defender as we know it will get a new interior, engine, auto option but otherwise be much the same. Then around 2010 comes the complete replacement based on the Discovery 3 platform.

It is getting the 2.7 Duratec TDCI as currently in the latest Transits... its a bloody great motor, hire a transit from budget and you'll agree.

I have heard only good about this motor. However, I have two concerns. Firstly a perusal of the Ford website shows that there are two specs. One for a 6-speed manual which has slightly better power and torque than the TD5 in Defender spec, and the five-speed auto which is less powerful and torquey than the TD5. So it may be a case of less power but an auto. Neither engine is a 2.7, both 2.4. So I assume it'll be bored out.

But will a 130 be available ? A 90 ? A ute of any sort ?

These are the BIG issues.

As this is a Defender thread and I am fast becoming a fan of them and if budget allowed wouldnt mind parking one against the D3, especially dual cab ute model  . My question is this, are all Defenders manuals and if so, why?? just noticed in my perusals of car sale sites that they are all manual ( I can drive a manual) just curious https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ ,

hi
almost all defenders are manuel, the reason stated was the auto would not take the punishement, however the usa got the very nice v8 auto in teh 90 and there was some limited production of autos for the dutch army, other wise it after market.

There was also the 50th Anniversary 90 which had the 4.0ltr V8 coupled to the ZF 4 speed. 8)

The new Defender (at teh end of the year) will be both manual and auto (6 speed) which I imagine would be awesome for fuel consumption and cruising.

Looks to me this 'last' Defender could be the pick of the bunch with the 6 speed ZF auto....hmmmm....

On paper at least, knowing Land Rover they're bound to stuff something up.

Almost all Defenders have been manuals, as befits utility vehicles. There is, however no particular reason why they could not be automatic, and as Landrover appears to be abandoning the utility market in Australia at least, I would not be surprised if automatics became available, and in fact more common than manuals, if the Defender survives. As far as I know, all sold in Australia have been manuals, but there are a few conversions about. The fitting of traction control and hill descent control just about removes any advantage of manuals over automatics, although automatics would have to have good cooling to stand prolonged use at low speeds with heavy loads (and often overloading and unsympathetic drivers) in high temperatures, such as agricultural or mining use in the interior in summer.

My 130 auto, After market fitting now has 126,000 km and the box is still going strong. It has the ZF 4 speed in it with custom stall converter.

Yes, yours is an example that it is perfectly feasible - but you live in a relatively cool climate, probably rarely overload it, and, I suspect, are a sympathetic driver, since you have to pay for repairs yourself!

Yea I do like to baby it most of the time. I'm to scared of destroying it by doing something stupid but I also work when off road as she seems to love low range.

Followed a link to a US rover parts site showing off a Disco with around 7" lift... and this is on the front page which i haven't seen before...
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Is this a mock-up or real??? It's titled "Defender New"

This is probably the most realistic option i've seen for an update.

Hmmmm thats shocking... i think i was so thrilled to see a good looking new defender i didn't bother having a close look... now i have had a close look at it i can see that whoever the hack who created this really didn't pay too much attention to the details... it really is a crap job

the tdv6 has been in stalled in a landrover defender but so has a duratec common rail deseil but there will use which unit handles dirty fuel the best as defenders are likely to go to places where fuel may not be ,as good, as for duratec engine in the transit the rally team transit, ford let mr bosch have a play with it,and it will keep up with a rally cross focus, [you will need brown trousers] to be fair and safe there fitted a rollbar to the transit and a kn air filter, them boys at dagenham now there stuff ,you wont be let down by them
