Hello series people,
I have a 1960(?) series 2. I have got on to a second hand oil bath air filter from a series 3 - looks the same but will it fit the series 2? My engine also has a stromberg carby, is this a replacement? I thought it strange when the choke cable was disconnected but on inspection it is not long enough to reach the mounting position on the carby, also, the fuel enters the carby from the back. All the linkages look normal.

Hi John, welcome to the forum! The later oil bath filter should fit fine - not sure if the mounting is slightly different but you should have no dramas getting it sorted. The Stomberg is indeed a replacement of the original carby which would have been a Solex - like the pic below. A lot were replaced over the years as some seemed to think the Stromberg was an easier carb to work and they were plentiful off Holdens. I personally think the Solex is a better carb and if you can find a decent one, worth rebuilding and fitting if you are that way inclined.
Maybe start a thread on your vehicle here and post a few pics so we can see what you have? 😊👍

Series 3 aircleaner is the same as Series 2/2a - provided the engines have the same number of cylinders. That is, both petrol and diesel four cylinder engines are the same, but the six is different.
As Homestar says, yours would have had a Solex originally, but in the 1970s-90s a second hand Stromberg off a Holden was dirt cheap compared to overhauling the Solex. While it works, it is not ideal for this vehicle.
The Solex carburettor is harder to understand, but usually works well and needs little attention.
In 1965 they merged with Zenith, and this was probably the reason that later Series 2a used a Zenith carburettor. This is easier to work on than the Solex (in my view), which is just as well, since they can be quite troublesome. The Zenith needs an adapter between it and the manifold, but otherwise the two types are interchangeable. New Zeniths are available.

Thank you for the info, I will have to try and find a Solex carby for it - I'm trying to keep as many original parts as possible and the Solex would put the original choke cable back in action (I hope). I the the oil bath filter will be worth buying as well. Will try and post some pics so you can see the poor old girl.

Reproduction Solex carbs are available from the usual UK parts dealers.
I’ve got one and it works just fine. It’s very difficult to find an original one which is why I went that way, otherwise I think I’d still be looking.
