View Full Version : RRS 2007 TDV8 - more black smoke less power

Hi folks - just noticed the last couple of days that this RRS is blowing a bit of smoke and I'm sure its a bit less power. I've only had it for a bit over a week and before Friday I didn't notice the smoke and I'm sure it had quite a bit more power.

Its more when putting the foot down a bit but yeah its quite a bit of smoke, the smoke seems the normal black colour though. I was amazed at how quickly the car accelerated before but now its ok but pretty much the same as my BT-50 or maybe not quite as good even.

I don't drive that heavy footed - but just give it a squirt sometimes. But yeah just more testing as it seems different - but when i put the foot down to test its quite a bit of smoke. I do notice a puff in the mirror also just when it changes gears sometimes.

Any ideas on what it might be or where I should start looking? Not sure if its my imagination - but I think I hear a bit of a different noise sometimes when accelerating - not a bad noise - more of a blowing air like noise....

Any help/suggestions appreciated! Its the 3.6l TDV8.

Sounds like a split intercooler hose. (The two on the top when you open the bonnet) Replace them with silicone hoses fixes it for good.

Could also be a cracked intake runner in the valve covers. That can pressurise the valve covers and push oil out everywhere. Ask me how I know... unfortunately your symptoms match what I had. RH valve cover cracked. Boost = massive crankcase pressure build-up. Thankfully I didn't have a seal go and runaway... But it was doughy and blew smoke like rolling coal.
Definitely check the two top intercooler hoses first. You may be lucky (hopefully). I fitted silicone hoses within a week of getting the car despite the factory hoses being only a few thousand kms old. I know the (Leyland Truck) silicone ones won't split. Good luck.

Split intercooler hose (there should be a fault) or stuck EGRs but again should be a fault indication.

Garry there probably is, it's just that someone has put tape over the check engine light...🤣😁🙄

hehe yeah no error light.. hmm.. I do have an IIDtool on order.. would it just show on that or would it be a warning light on the dash?

I had a quick look at the hoses this morning before leaving for work and no obvious split but perhaps its a small one.. thanks guys will have a good look.

if its the "cracked intake runner in the valve covers" is that a big job? Anyways will check the hoses properly first... should I still be driving the car or could I possibly damage something? (drove it to work today just taking it easy - still drives quite nice and doesn't blow much smoke if i don't accelerate too hard)

Clogged fuel filter?
Just a guess.

Cheers mate it was just that - much relieved :) The right one (as you're looking from the front) has a big split underneath it near the engine. I've put some silicon tape on it but there is quite a whistle now as some air seems to get through it when I put the foot down - it was quite a big split. But yeah no smoke now and good power :) Hey is it normal for there to be a little bit of oil inside these hoses?

Would anyone know who sells the silicone hoses? I had a bit of a google without much luck. Found a few non silicon ones...

Good outcome!!! I would honestly buy a pair of new genuine ones, they are cheap enough and at least the correct shape. They also last quite a long time!

I bought mine from Britpart in UK but there are probably local suppliers as well. Both of my TDV8’s did have a bit of an oily film in the hoses so I would say a film is ok, any more would be a concern. Will leave that to the experts to quantify.
Good luck with the sport- they are a great drive- just keep the maintenance up.

Great result! Really pleased it's that simple, easy and cheap :)
If you don't mind lairy colours you can get the silicone hoses most places. If you want black then it's harder. I got mine from Leyland Hose in the UK. They make them in India. Good to deal with, but not cheap. Land rover silicone turbo hoses | Leyland Silicone Hoses (https://www.lhss.co.uk/land-rover-hoses/turbo-hoses/) Britpart have them, and eBay is another option. In the meantime you can try cleaning the hose really well and wrapping with lots of electrical tape or self fusing silicone tape as a quick temporary fix while waiting on parts.

Was going to fit a silicon induction hose to my RRS but the Indi advised to stick with the LRO original type as the silicon hoses have been known to slip off .

I just ended up getting oem ones from here - Land Rover Parts - HEATING 7 COOLING SYSTEM - RANGE ROVER SPORT (https://www.britishautoparts.com.au/heating_7_cooling_system___range_rover_sport) - was $80 each compared to $130ea quoted from Darwin Landrover.

I've wrapped it with silicon tape but there is quite a whistle now if I put my foot down a bit - seems it didn't quite seal it properly - but power is back and no smoke! :)

Yeah it was just a thin film of oil in the pipes so hopefully ok.

Split intercooler hose was my car problem too and the split was on the bottom too. We were up in Cooktown and towing a 25 foot caravan when it started blowing smoke. Ordered new hoses from Cairns and all was good.
