Windscreen suffered a life ending impact from an inbound truck near Smithton (Tas) last week.

I've done my reading and have drawn the following conclusions:

1. Need new trim clips
2. There don't seem to be that many complaints about non-OEM screens though there is a risk. I'm a little concerned about reports of them being noisy.
3. Rain sensor might need calibrating
4. Install needs more than average knowledge to stop water leaks.

So the quotes are in .... and I don't have windscreen cover...

1. NRMAs recommended Instant windscreens - $450 aftermarket or $1400 OEM - they know about the clips.
2. Windscreens obrian - $900 aftermarket or $1900k
3. JLR dealer - $2k

I'm happy to go with 3 if the job is perfect but there is a lot to say for the $450 job - they won't calibrate the sensor but I can buy an IID tool with the difference.

Any insight on the non-OEM (National Glass?) windscreens?

The dealer will not do the windscreen themselves - they will just sub contract it out - most likely to O'Briens.

Once you have a non genuine screen you will only be able to get non genuine screens fitted at a later date with an insurance claim. If it has a genuine screen you can always ensure the insurance company uses a genuine screen.

Now in your specific case here with no insurance - I guess the choice is yours - I have heard some of the knockoffs have imperfections and cause distortions.

There is another option and you did not hear it from me. You could wait until you insurance renews and take out windscreen cover, leave it a few months and then claim a new screen. O'briens to everything and in many cases you do not even need to contact your insurance company. But you didn't hear that from me.

Good point on the subsequent screens.

NRMA are very specific that they can use non genuine glass so don't appear to have a leg to stand on there. Probably means a new insurer ;)

Yes they can use non genuine glass but only where it is of the same standard and properties of the original - if there is an aftermarket glass with the Optikool properties then fine but I dont know of any that do.
