Fuel pump re-learn not working

My Puma went in for a new vcv / scv, rattling injectors.
Plug in the computer to do a fuel pump and injector re-learn. The fuel pump would not work, but injectors worked fine. The garage has tried 3 times on two different machines and the pump will still not re-learn. The garage said this is the first time a re-learn has not worked for them.
The vcv was a genuine Land Rover, not a cheap eBay one.
Can anyone help me with this ? Should I take it to every land rover garage In Melbourne till it works ?
The injectors are a lot better than before the vcv was replaced, but still a little noisy at 1500-2000 rpm. I’m keen to sort this out.

Not sure if this will be of use, but I recently had the same thing with a suspect vcv and what I called noisy injectors... I got the vcv replaced and then had to return back to the mechanics to have my exhaust manifold replaced and this is when I enquired about the noise of the injectors... The mechanics did the the Pump and injector pilot relearn and they informed that mine took quite few goes and even then it didn't reach 100% as I understand it. They informed me that this "may" be a sign that the injectors are reaching their end of life (175k on the clock) - I'm hoping they're incorrect and in the meantime will be using some fuel additive that I've had success with before to hopefully extend life... Anyway, I went down to pick my car up and the rattly injector noise was gone and it drove better than before so I'm currently happy with that... Just hope I get a lot more LIFE from the injectors...

as I said this may be of no help but that's my experience...

I frequently have this issue. Last one I did however worked first try!. There is known problems with relearn procedures on these Puma pumps....

Firstly, I presume there were no DTCs? Some codes stop the re-learn.

Then, is the car re-mapped? I couldn't get a re-learn to work until I flashed the map back to standard.

@Rob Mine has 150,000 and hope the injectors are not on the way out.
@Justin Sound like I should keep asking them to try again each time I go in.
@Skidrov It has just been re mapped, but they tried twice before the re map was done.

The relearn has to be done with a certain number of conditions that need to be met, a faulty brake pedal switch etc or insufficient coolant temps etc need to be isolated and rectified first. Plus there is also simple issues like poor comms to the port etc. I usually have at least 3 attempts using Autologic, some first time, and 1 actually never learnt, I'm not certain yet if the dealer was able to, I must get back to them and see...

have them check the can bus both high and low for noise.

plug a crow in and watch the high/low level voltages and the shape of the bus singals.

if their not nice the relearn will be aborting from lost packages. there isnt a fail code for this.

I’ll get them to read your post next time I take it in. The re-lean is aborting with no fault code.

Does the reset needs to be done at a Land Rover garage with Land Rover software or could any garage with a fancy computer do it ?

I'll offer a DIY point of view.

If your car is a 2.4, you might want to search this forum for "forscan" and also go to forscan.org - this is a piece of free software that lets you DIY a re-learn, and many other things. However, based on what I've read/experienced to date, it only works on a 2.4, which is near as dammit a standard Transit motor and ECU (FORscan is Ford-oriented software). And, note that (as you'll see if you find the thread) I did go down this road, eventually got a good result, but had a few unwanted learnings along the way. [bigsad] To be clear, it does NOT work on the 2.2 - too many ECU changes by LR.

And, I would expect that any LR-oriented mechanic, main dealer or otherwise, should have the software to do your car. For example, I was going to go to Pickards in Abbotsford to have a re-learn done, and they had no concerns about being able to do it. Didn't end up going there (self-solved it), but my point is they saw no issues doing the re-learn.

Further, I would expect a Ford diesel shop would be able to do a re-learn on the 2.4 because, again, it's kinda a 2.4 Transit.

But, as to "any" garage being able to do it, especially on the 2.2, I will need our resident trade experts to comment - no idea what's typical these days. We no longer can assume any mechanic can service any car 'coz they have a set of feeler gauges, electronic or otherwise... [tonguewink]

I replaced my VCV and ran a re-learn with my BAS ECU module.


Replacing the VCV on the 2.4 requires a hex key, a magnetic pick up tool and a lot of skin off your hand.


Re-learns have to be done at an engine temp between 75 and 80C. The BAS gives you a temp read out. You must also revert back to the standard mapping for the re-learn, but this is simple.


Did it all with an app on my iPhone.
