View Full Version : Bloody Neighbours! who needs 'em 2

our local paper, the manly daily, has reported a couple of dog attacks this week.
the first was by a labrador/kelpie cross on an 18month old bub in the front yard at belrose. my first question with this is why the kid was in the front yard unsupervised. my second is why the dog was out of the yard.
the next one was 2 bull terriers got into a yard and played tug-o-war with a cat. the cat lost.
the third was a 7 yr old boy "fell" into a yard where 2 cross rottys were and one of them bit him on the foot.
that yard was my yard, and that cross rotty was one of my 3. and out of the 3, he is the most pleasant, tolerant and well behaved. last week, i had to take the dog, theo, to the vet. his tail had a large swollen lump on one of the vertebrae an inch or 2 from his bum and he couldn't move the tail. both the vet and us assumed he'd caught it while running around the back yard between the trees.
early last week, i caught the neighbours kids and the soon to be dog bite victim up the back yard annoying the dogs. the victim was standing on top of the dividing brick wall. gave them the usual lecture about keeping away from the dogs when we were not around, as next door's parents have done many times.
lady next door told us her husband had only this week had a go at the kids for teasing the dogs through the fence.
when the ranger came up to investigate, the little mongrel spun some story about falling into the yard, luckily, the kids who live next door spoke up and told their mum he was lying and that he was sitting on the wall with his legs in our yard. i think they call this trespassing.
the parents of the kid, rather than telling him it served him right and that will teach you to do as you're told, want the dog put down. this is not going to happen, as the dog was contained in it's own yard and was protecting it's own property.
but, we are facing theo being deemed a dangerous dog. this means we will have to raise our fences to 6ft, he will have to wear a muzzle when out and will never be allowed off leash in a public place.
this really sucks.
presonally, i'd like to see the kid put down. he is obviously exhibiting anti social behaviour now, so it might be an idea to curb this now before he becomes a burden to society.
you may, by now, have picked up that i am a little cranky about this!!!!!! :x :x :x :x

we have the same sort of bylaws up here, you have a dog to protect your property but if it bites someone, or just growls at them, its a dangerous dog. When I built this place I enclosed 5acres around the house in a 9ft chainwire security fence, but due to the fact that the electricity guy has to come and read the meter, and cant tell you exactly which day, I have to lock my dogs up anyway. Some of this POWERS OF ENTRY legislation is garbage and defeats the purpose of home security.

I'm sorry to hear that barney mate, we been in similar situations ourselves
It's time a few of us dog lovers got together and petitioned to get some of these dog laws "fixed" or form our own party to do it.

Mate as a dog lover you have my sympathy i know i would be upset in that occasion. Neither of our dogs would attack someone unless provoked either.
Surely given the other kids owned up and said the kid had provoked the dog should help your case. matt

I grew up wil Labs, German shepards and other mongrels, hence have some sympathy towards this situation.
In my opinion, dog bites are generally caused by some sort of provoction towards the dog first.
I have been bitten different times (none serious) by dogs and I admit to them all that it was my fault not the dogs.
A work friend had a similar thing happen to him but it was on the street with the neighbours kid. Later learned that the kid use to tease the dog through the fence.
Unfortunately they always take the victims side in of the story in these circumstances, and they never say that they were teasing the dog initially.

Crump- usually if you cant give access to the electrickery guy they will leave a card for you to fill in with the meter reading. If this tallies with your average usage they assume u r honest. They will check it occasionally on the days they CAN make it in past the wee puppies.
Give em a ring and ask about it.

Thats crapola mate, hopefully the rangers or whom make those sorts of decisions have an idea of sense about them. Question though, I noticed you said you had 3 dogs. Interesting up here in QLD we are only allowed 2 and I am on 8 acres. I would love a 3rd but you have to go through all sorts of crap to see if you can get a permit.

Stevo look into it as I think "working dogs" might be excepted. Just need to biy a sheep or something to go with it.

Umm we have one sheep called Mildred and 2 guinea fowl  , though are looking at adding a horse and some more grass eaters. Will do though, seems ridiculous when we have so much space easily for another dog, thanks mate,

G'day Folks https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
In regards to the fence thing, and access by essential service personel, we have put a fence at both sides of the house, level with the front of the house, this is only a post and chain wire one, but it allows people to access, door, meter, etc. as required by law, they can also see that there are dogs behind the inner front fence (Cattle Dogs & Borders) the dogs are secure, the legitimate visitors are secure and the Council is happy, Oh, and if there is a sign saying "Beware of the Dog" "Savage Dog" it is admitting liability, but a sign requesting to please shut the gate is OK. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ I just happen to have asign on my inner fence that says "Todays Intruder, Tomorrows Dog S***t." 8O as I used to have a sharp Cattle Dog Bit**h, she bit me twice when I came into the yard at night
In Qld I think that on Rural "A" you are allowed 4 dogs, by most councils. and 2 +permits for a further 2 on Rural "Res".

G'day Stevo68 https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
With your location you could be in Beaudesert shire and the council is better than GC city I think, and with no Garbos I would say it is Rural "A"

good news everybody. Theo has been given the all-clear.
i spoke to the ranger today and he said the council's solicitor wasn't going to take it any further as essentially the kid was tresspassing and the dog was acting within it's nature protecting it's territory. the kid was bitten, not mauled.
both the ranger and i agreed that i should raise the height of the fence to discourage further intrusion and taunting of the dogs.
this has really lifted a burden from our shoulders. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
