View Full Version : The term "Rangie"

I'm not sure if it's just where I now live or the new lot of people I have been exposed to, bit does anyone else noticed that more people are using the term "Rangie", not referring to our great Range Rovers, but to the Ford Ranger.
Does my head in when I hear it as I get interested in talking to them, only to find out they mean an inferior dual cab..

Ive never heard a Landcruiser referred to as Landie , They are Tojo's where I come from .I have found it more of a term used for the Classics, but have still heard the newer ones called it. Yes, though, there is a definite tone to the "I drive a Range Rover" amongst some owners of the newer type. Those people usually have no idea about Land Rovers in general though.
The "Landy" reference to the LC, I have heard it quite a bit. My experience with that are people new to the 4wd thing and once they get comfortable with me and my calling of my RRC Rangie, that them calling their LC Landy was cool.. True Toyota kids wouldn't dream of calling them anything but Cruisa.

I recall reading a story by an Australian Author some years ago when the Americans were fighting in the Pacific in WW2 & the Estate Manager drove a Land Rover, FFS!

Who really cares what people call their trucks??
I care!!
These people are out there calling their Rangers, which have been around for ten minutes at most, "Rangies".. it's basically cheating in life, can't come up with their own nick names, so they steal one of an actual car that has earnt it! [emoji12]
As someone has mentioned, the other one I have heard often is Ranga. They can have that one...

Actually Kon, I like the old "Ra-Ro" instead of all that crap. While a bit of a test of the Throat & Jaw muscles it still is syn-ominous with Range Rover in my mind.
I also just wish people would not call their Discoverys, Discos or trucks either. Very Bogan-ish.[bighmmm]
There, I've said it & now they can shoot me if they like. [biggrin]

I have never heard a Ford Ranger called a Rangie, but I have heard them called Rangas, and worse.
I have known quite a few people to call a Land Cruiser a Landy and I have had to point out the error of their ways!
In my house we generally refer to the fleet as the 2 door, the Rangie and the Vogue. Or we differentiate by colour.

I have to say I am very guilty of calling Discovery's "Disco's". I'm actually sure I used to call them that before I ever owned a LR product.. we just call ours Hoppy now.
I do agree with the truck statement. Very American ish and quite frustrating listening to someone call their 2.5lt Navara a "truck" after I have spent the day working on actual trucks - the 15lt, 600Hp kind.

Trucks? Another annoying Americanism that has infiltrated our lexicon. Trucks are those big things with heaps of wheels that carry goods and stuff. Like DaveD2 drives. We drive cars or Landies or Rangies but we're not driving trucks. So there! That's my grump for the day!

I still can't work out how an Epoke ever became a Range Rover.
I know it is part of LR's marketing strategy, but it actually drags the RR,FFRR,RRS or Rangie name down.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAT! You actually drank it? OMFG! I don't think that is the idea at all, certainly it seems to be an Ego thing just to flash it when your mate's call around & kept on the shelf for all to see & ponder over. But to drink an overpriced bottle of red? OMFG! But I know you ain't into that ****.
You may have had better success with a nice Yellowtail Cab Sav. $8 ----- 12 a bottle, & it is nice drinking. Ah well your next 50th then.[biggrin]

We won one bottle.
The other we got when Mac's Liquor (Woolworths before BWS) had it on special, 20% off. They also had another special, buy 6 bottles of wine and get 20% off. We asked if the Grange could be the 6th bottle and would the extra 20% off still apply. It did, so we effectively got 36% off the Grange. It wasn't one of the ultra-high priced vintages.
We didn't keep them on the shelf. They were in our wine fridge.

Did you take them out well before you popped the cork? The experts say Room Temperature but I dunno. My BiL called around one day with a Bottle that been on his back seat in his car in the sun. The warmth seemed to really smooth out & enhance the contents & any alcohol taste spikes were absent & it became a very enjoyable smooth drink & I would never have believed that could happen, but it did.
Cheers. [smilebigeye]

........as well as a Series a Friggin Jeep.
I recall reading a paperback a couple of years ago when a Woman went out to the South Pacific to manage a Coconut Plantation during WW2. Don't ask.:rulez:
The only thing that ****ed me off was her frequent reference to her Land Rover she drove around in.
The thing was, LR was only available Post War .Of course she meant a JEEP
A well researched book. Not.

Oooh, I've just discovered this thread! My chance for a hearty "Hear hear!" or a grump of my own.
Yeah, this "truck" business. It has to be stopped at once. Somebody write a letter to The Times.
I also want to congratulate you on using correct plurals ("Hear hear!! I say). It's "Landies". Not Landys.
Don't even get me started on "Landy's" (God, it was hard to make myself write that; I think it's given me a nosebleed).
Now..... I probably should go back to the start of this thread and discover what it's actually about.
Though, before I do, I think I noticed somebody using the term "fora" correctly. Man, this is the thread for me.....
