View Full Version : Cracks in a TD5
Tusker
1st May 2006, 09:28 AM
We had to abandon Tusker at Birsdville last week. What started as an oil leak worsened to the point the engine was pushing oil out under pressure like a tap. You can trace our travels around Birdsville by following the trails.
A hair-line fracture developed at the front of the block, near the alternator, above an external oil line that seems to feed the timing cover. Has anyone heard of this before?
LandRover Assist were pretty good, it'll be shipped to an Adelaide dealer for repairs under warranty.
Oh the joys of LandRover ownership.

Sorry to hear about that Max
What build year is your TD5?
I have never heard of this problem before. What is LRA saying about it?

Build date is June 03, bought new in Dec 03.
At this stage the official line is its going to the nearest dealer for repair. In Adelaide in a couple of weeks. So it hasn't been assessed for warranty yet. The fun is about to begin. Again.

that's a real bastard Max. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
I wonder if the oil line fitting is a taper fitting into the block and it's been screwed in too tight at the factory........?????????

I hope it's not the cracked block problem that Terry Ryeland just had.

Max - how many km's does yours have up?
I'm becoming more and more nervous about Td5 ownership now that I have 180,000km up. I also keep hearing rumours about big-end problems on high-maileage Td5's from somewhere too. After hearing a Tdi300 idle and run next to mine the other day, it sounded rumbly and smooth compared to mine which kind of "crackles" along. I don't like the sound of a Td5 if muneis representative at all.
I think I might take a trip down to Bruce Davis or Graeme Cooper for their opinion.

only 70,000..
The idle balance/sound will always be different comparing a 4 banger to a 5 banger. Thats not a worry.

I ha 160,000 on my D2 Disco when I sold it. The TD5 donk never missed a beat. The closest thing to any kind of engine failure was the fuel pressure regulator packed it in when a new fuel pump was fitted. :?

It looks like the truck driver has lost his way.
TUSKER has just turned up here, delivered by an unhappy tilt tray driver !!

I've just had a phone call to say its arrived!
Not sure why they changed their mind, but at least we can get some gear out of it now.
What was up with the driver?

He collected a whole heap of roos on his trip & got bogged once.
I think he's pretty happy to be back in Sydney https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ .

Bad news Max, and yes what a way to save fuel, as you know I can truly understand your predicament.
Best of luck

Update
It all turned out ok in the end.
LR changed their mind & sent a flatbed up to Birdsville to retrieve it.
Trivetts got onto it same day it arrived. Turns out it was the vacuum pump that was cracked. "Never changed one of those before". It was of those one-in-a-million problems I guess.
So we're back on the road!

Any compensation for the loss of time on holidays?
Tell ya what though, it would have been one hell of a towtruck bill, Sydney to Birdsville and return https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
