What were ford thinking when they made this add?

Has anyone seen the new Territory add. It starts by showing a woman driving a big truck to school to drop her kids off then it shows the same woman getting out of an 80 Series Land Cruiser (i imagine they want to give the impression that its truck like to drive) then it shows about half a dozen women standing around the front of a long line of Land Cruisers and Patrols talking outside the school as all the kids run in and out of cars and into the school grounds. The as they stand around talking another mother turns up in a shiny new Territory shifting gears with the triptronic function and showing how easy it is to drive.

Now given the bad press 4wd's are gettingat the moment why the hell would ford make and add advertising 4wd's doing exactly what the steriotype says they do. Not a real smart move in my book. Matt

Hmm... that ad's been on Sydney TV for nearly a year. Pretty silly ad IMHO, and Ford would know that it does nothing positive for 4WD ownership. I guess that they've taken their bat and ball and gone home with the Explorer and only have the Territory left.

Yeah saw the ad first time last night, I think they are trying to push that the normal 4WD is truck like to drive whereas the Territory is more car like. They seem to miss the point that they are actually stereotyping 4WD's and forget that in most peoples eyes, the Territory would be thrown into the same pile, like ummmm DERRRRR 8O ,

Short sighted, but the entire industry is desperate to move anything that has an engine capacity over 2 litres, at the moment. The Territory is doing relatively well.

I have a mate who works at Holden HQ and they are very very concerned about the impact of fuel prices on the Commodore. 20% reduction in sales last year and a new model this year which is looking like being one of their most important in a long time.

I agree with the hilux thing Noddy.

As for the large car thing, it is becoming a problem, if fuel goes above $1.50 which it has in some areas people with larger cars simply wont be able to drive them. At $2/L it will cost me $160 to fill the disco, christ it cost $80 for 55L the other day.

There is one advantage to increasing fuel costs. manufacturers are being forced to lower fuel economy figures which is good for the consumer but its also good for the environment.

If holden and ford are worried why the hell dont they team up with the Europen counterparts and plonk a nice torquey turbo diesel into the commodore and the falcon. Or is that to obvious. I understand diesel is dearer than petrol but if a nearly 3t D3 can get around 12L/100km then a falcon or dunnydore would get 7L/100km, if that were the case they wouldnt be able to produce enough. Its reallu annoying to sit back and be able to see that diesel is the answer to many of the economy problems, as Europe has discovered but Australian manufaturers and other manufacturers keep producing large engined petrol cars for the Australian market.

The Territory would blow the competition out of the water even more so than it does now if it ends up with the TD engine like has been rumoured. Matt

Did not we say elsewhere on this site that the TD(5?) was being dumped for a 2.7 4 cyl ford donk?
Or are you hinting the TDV6 may end up in the Territory?

[/b][/quote] I tell ya, I know I have read it somewhere recently in either 4WD Mthly or Overlander, I had a quick speed read last night to confirm, but since Ace has also confirmed that he read it, I know Im not nuts :wink: . But I am pretty sure the article or comment was that Ford were looking at the TDV6 for the Territory. A previous article I read mentioned that they were looking at a turbo diesal for the territory and the recent article mentioned the LR TDV6,

From what I have heard, Ford has definitely been testing the twin turbo version of the TDV6 in the Territory. This is the same engine as in the S-type Jag.

The defender is definitely getting a 2.7L Ford TD based on the 2.2L unit in the Mondeo.

The Territory on the other hand i am not sure about. I know there is a TD planned. Noddy has commented on it being a derivative of the TDV6, and if he is correct in saying its a twin turbo engine i might even buy one, scrap the body and throw the engine in my disco https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ 8) But i would assume it will come from the Jaguar stabla, as the TDV6 did. Jaguar are making very good turbo diesel engines at the moment. Matt

You're actually right on, there Ace.

Falcons and Commodores are long overdue for one of the new, clean, diesel donks. Their sales slouch is entirely of thier own making, as car size is not the issue, just fuel consumption.

I see the VW Polo has some ripper little 1.9 t/diesel which does about 5l/100ks and is about 20 grand or so. (and apparently goes very well). Kinda makes a mockery of the heavy hybrid Prius which sucks more fuel and costs nearly twice as much.

I'm actually considering a new diesel jobbie to replace the Falcon, which does about 700ks every week. I'd like another Falcon, which is just the right size for swmbo and other journeys, but a Golf or Peugeot 307 (TD) at around $30,000 are looking real good. Just cant beat the idea of 60mpg+.
