Does anyone know where I may be able to buy 5 litres of way oil from - something like Mobil Vactra or Shell Tonna? Can only seem to find 20 and 200 litre drums for sale on the Internet, but I have no need for that quantity nor anywhere to store even a 20 litre drum of something that will take years to get through. Even if someone has a 20 or 200 litre drum of the stuff and wants to sell me 5 litres?

TIA.

Have chat to the staff at Suppercrap and see if they can get it in, they sell a bit of Shell’s product.
I’d also check if your local machine shop could help as they would use it too.
My local bearing/bolt supplier carries various oils too, shout out if you want me to have a look.

Otherwise somewhere like this Machineryhouse - New & Used Wood, Metal & Workshop Equipment - Home | Hare & Forbes Machineryhouse (https://www.machineryhouse.com.au), not much in the way of oils online but they would definitely sell what you need.

If it for the bed, saddle, and tailstock of a lathe just use engine oil.

If you are going to use an engine oil. Use a light engine oil.
I could not believe the difference moving from a 5W50 to a straight ISO 46 on the saddle of a little lathe. The 5W50 really dragged.

I should be able to help you out Homestar. Not sure how much is left in my 20L drum but should at least be able to give you a litre or so to get you going.
What machine will you be using it on?

Thanks - have bought a lathe, so that mainly. 👍

I have always used whatever clean light oil was available which is usually these days a 10W-30 as my POS Falcon uses it. I now only have one lathe for hobby purposes. A Liang Dei toolroom grade lathe from Taiwan. 4' between centres and 16" swing over bed. When I had a machine shop I had a little Hercus bench lathe, the Liang Dei, an 8' Colchester and a big Chinese bugger 21' between centres. I bought the Chinaman at an auction of a closed factory. Bargain if the day, $2750 plus auctioneers charges. Cost more than that in crane and truck hire to get it out of the place and into mine. Had to be jackhammered out of the floor at the factory.

Thanks for that. Given I'll be only using it occasionally sounds like engine oil will be fine for my application. [emoji106]

Appreciate the offer Steve, I'll go with engine oil I think. [emoji4][emoji106]

I got some from a customer who decanted from a 20 litre.
I now deal with an oil blender so I'll ask them if they can supply small quantities.

No worries.
Hydraulic oil in ISO46 or 68 grade would be fine too. For an occasional use machine just keeping it clean and oiled is more important than a specific oil IMO.

Several manufacturers make a specific 'slideway oil'.
Designed to stay in place (it's tacky), designed to reduce stick-slip, designed to mix OK with coolant. Typically only available in 20litre drums.

Hydraulic/motor oil is better than nothing but the correct oil would possibly be better.

Found a supplier in Bayswater who has it in 5litre containers. Also chasing up the oil blender I deal with (also in Bayswater) to see if they make it and can supply in small quantities.

If you can get it in anything between a 32 and 68 I'll buy some off you. I use an iso 46 synthetic compressor oil, but always wanted to try a dedicated slideway oil.

I seem to recall there was a place on the East coast that sells slideway oil to model makers in 1L bottles, but do you think I can find it now?

Problem is that freight makes it expensive.
This is the company in QLD that blend it (there are probably others) Slideway 68 (https://prolube.com.au/shop/industrial-oils/slideway-68/)
Might be worth contacting them to see if they supply anyone in the West.

These guys also list it in 5 litre SLIDEWAY OIL 68 - Ultralube (http://ultralube.com.au/product/slideway-oil/)

Never sure about buying this sort of product from Ebay......LATHE MILL MAINTENANCE SPINDLE MACHINE SLIDEWAY OIL HERCUS MYFORD BRIDGEPORT ML7 | eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LATHE-MILL-MAINTENANCE-SPINDLE-MACHINE-SLIDEWAY-OIL-HERCUS-MYFORD-BRIDGEPORT-ML7/153304373561?hash=item23b1a71939:m:mnLkG5VNc2GVMls LomEDUkA&frcectupt=true)

Prolude do a slideway 68 in 5L. I purchased some last year for the Lathe bed and a Shaper I am about to recondition.

Slideway oil has additives to make the oil stick better to the bed. Do not use Slideway for bearings. On the headstock bearings I use an ISO 46 Hydraulic oil. Specification is actually and ISO 32 Hydraulic oil, but was advised that the ISO 46 was fine, had access to large quatities at the time as where I worked it was used on steam turbines.

Turns out I can get 5 litres from the blender I deal with in Bayswater.
Good price but I have to wait till they are making it (they are not going to mix up 5 litre specially for me).

I also found details of an oil company in Dandenong that carry it. Seems a lot of specialist shops and blenders will supply in smaller quantities.
