Will an LT95 overdrive fit a 6x6 LT95a without major work?

I have what seems to be a good used LT95a 6x6 with a bottom PTO transmission. I'm guessing that fitting an LT95 overdrive would not be as strait forward as it would be for an older non 6x6 and no bottom PTO LT95, is this correct? I'm not going to be using this in a 6x6 so that output can be removed but I suspect the PTO sprocket and chain will interfere with the overdrive. I'm asking because a friend has a used overdrive he will sell me if I want it. Thanks.

I'm not sure of the type of o/d you have, but if it is a Fairey it is possibly a bit fragile to use behind a turbo'd 4BD1.

But, if you a careful not to load it, judicious use in 3rd and 4th may be possible.

Probably yes, but it wouldn’t last 5 minutes behind the Isuzu I wouldn’t think. I use one behind a 3.5 V8 when I have no load aboard in third and forth, that’s about it. They are getting rare as they normally die a pretty unrepairable death in a lot of cases.

If you want better highway speed, change diff centres to a better ratio - this will last the life of the vehicle.

the rear axle drive units in the hole the over drive bolts up to.

you need the output gear for the gearbox that suits the overdrive and the ratio in the tcase.

If you're pulling the rear drive unit then yes..

Yes you are correct, you cannot use the overdrive and the bottom PTO unit together as you have to remove the gear with the sprocket that drives to PTO to fit the overdrive. If you are going to use that transmission in a 4x4 you will have to change the speedo gears as they are suited to 4.7 diff ratios and will give you a wrong speedo reading.

You would need to remove the magic PTO parts that drive the rear axle. That would be a shame.

I have always wondered why the Perentie Lt95 went for a chain drive for the lower PTO winch drive when the much earlier 101 system is a gear driven PTO - for sure the drive goes sideways not fore and aft but at build that could be changed.

With the 101 LT95 you can fit an overdrive and still have the PTO at the bottom.

the drop chain pto was chosen as it provided a more direct line of drive to the front mounted winch and didn't occupy the space needed for the 6x6 rear drive unit.

But the OP is not wanting to use in a 6x6.

However the 101 LT95 can provide drive for 6x6 afterall it provided drive for the 101 powered trailer while still providing a PTO on the bottom for the side mounted winch..

In response I wasnt refering soley to the OP's question but the general question of why the chain drive was used for the PTO.

the primary drive for the 6x6 setup was refined in the production runs of the fc101 lt95 and the winch was a side winder so a gear driven PTO was the easiest to install and from memory used a helical cross that fit onto one of the intermediate gears. Although I also remember vaguely a setup that ran a normal gear to drive a bevel pinion.
