Hi everybody.
My 2003 Defender 110 Td5 is now out of warranty and I did not take up their generous offer of an extended warranty for a further 3 years at "only" $2400.

But I've now just received an offer of extended roadside assistance for $109 for a year.
Is it worth it or should I have the vehicle added to my RACWA membership I wonder?
Anyone any experience of their offer part of which I've copied below.

ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE
Land Rover Roadside Assistance covers the eligible vehicle for any non-collision mechanical failure or specified automotive related (non-mechanical) fault.
Land Rover Roadside Assistance will endeavour to mobilise the eligible vehicle however where not practicable or where any mechanical action may void any part of the vehicle warranty, towing will be provided.

Over here I can get RACQ Ultracare which offers the exact same thing for ANY vehicle I'm driving including my motorbike even vehicles I'm travelling in that arent mine, plus accomodation and hire car costs within limits for $120 a year.

Go with RACWA Ultimate, similar to RACQ Ultra.

LR Roadise assist is a crock. My understanding is that (as usual) it's nothing to do with LRA. It is managed by Mondial Assistance, who just farm the work out to RACQ/NRMA/RACV/RACWA etc. anyway.

Hi Alan,

Just intrested was the extended warrenty they offered for $2400 with ASNW (All States Network Waranty).

I recently purchased a vehicle that still had 2 years remaining under this warrenty, sold through the dealer, and was able to transfer into my name with the car.

Given the issue I had in transfering (and costs for inspections), the policy almost cancelled because it was a few thousand km's over for a service I am seriousley considering cashing in the remaining amount. I have been told I can do this.

Reading the policy and thier exclusions I just don't see the value. Other than normal service I have had to get brake components replaced, axles and el;ectrical. known of these have been covered. Nor do they cover the motor cooking, oil leaks etc. So given that major issues associated with the Td5 I would like to know if they are covered;

- Oil in ecu/ injector harness (They do not cover oil/ fluid leaks so I assume not).
- Rear Axles (No classed as drivetriain wear)
- Rotors etc (obviousley wear).
- Rear door bent from spare (no, does apply to body)

Given this and the fact I have to get slugged by oil and filter changes every 10,000km i am ready to cash in, if I can.

Sorry to digress with your post, but I would be interested on other experience with ASWN. In particular if anyone has had a claim that made it worth it.

Also I have always had full roadside assistance as a RACWA, and would strongly recommend. My old mans a mechanic, but given i spend alot of time country driving it has been a godsend a number of times.

Just raed my post, and i did not mean 'major issues with the Td5'. i was rather highlighting that the few major/ minor issues they are known for are not reallyn covered by this warranty.

Hi Brett.
Yes I was offered that from ASNW but refused it because it covered very little as far as I could see.
This latest offer seems to come direct from LR as I lifted part of the conditions from their website.
Does it really matter who recovers you if stranded? If they're farming it out to the RAC in each state, hopefully we'll get good service.

Although I have my reservations in RACWA as their patrolmans attitude towards my sons S3 years ago was very bad.
I only had to bleed the pump and it started but the patrolman had just shrugged his shoulders and gave his own unwanted advice as to what he thought of LRs of any kind and then left without fixing it!

The next bad incident was with the daughters Gemini when I asked them to check if it was the timing chain making a noise and they said it wasn't.
2 weeks later it broke and caused considerable damage to the engine and they didn't want to know about it.
However on the upside they've started the cooks Camry a couple of times when she's had probs. with the immobiliser.

I'll take the LR offer and if it's no good I'll get the beast put on our membership with RACWA.

Don't bother with land Rover Assist. It's just NRMA. I rang it once while I was still covered and they actually put me straight through to the NRMA.

OR They just tow you to the nearest shop. There's no point IMHO.

Get top cover with all the towing options because the two can cost you as much as a new transmission. I know this.

you would think being called rover assist they may know something about rovers.....


i will bet NRMA will know more about and will be cheaper to join and have membership.....
and yes.....they do just put you through straight to mondial......


i know all this from when the battery in my remote died and lurch refused
to start.....the guy came out....had no knowledge of the vehicle......and couldnt get
lurch started......even after about three calls back to base to get the required codes and instructions on how to enter the code.......
after a couple of hours they sent a tow truck around to get lurch home....
and paid the cab fare to get the family home.....
exactly what you get from NRMA at half the cost.......


and when lurch got home he was happy enough to start using the spare
key straight away as if nothing had happened......</span>

I got a three year ASWN warranty when i purchased my 98 Tdi Disco. Must say, it was a lot cheaper than the $2400 quoted above (about 15% of that actually).

It has come in handy so far as i have had an alternator and power steering pump replaced under warranty for nothing. Having said that, i think i have been lucky as there are strict limits on what is covered and the value.

G'day

I used LR assist only once, when our TDI Disco decide to throw the belt tensioner off. This happened about 40km north of Port Agusta at about 4pm. Back then LR assist was really good to us. They arranged for us and our car to be picked up and taken to a mechanic, who couldn't do much as the bolt & casing that holds the tensioner on was stripped and the front casing needed to be replaced . They put us in a motel for the night and took the car to Ford dealer (LR agent) the next day. The dealer had to order the new casing in etc and it was over the ANZAC day holiday so it was going to take awhile. Any we got a hire car from them and had it until the Disco was fixed. The person we dealt with was really helpful and we didn't pay a cent.

The only downside was the Ford dealer LR agent, they fixed the car but did a crap job of it. Didn't even clean the old bits of belt of the pulley's, neglected to check the aircon amongst other things, as when the belts threw they took out the A/C wire under the cover. Of coures I didn't discover the A/C problem until I was half way back to Woomera. I let them have it when I got home then drove back the next day and let them have another dose......

Never had a need since then to use them, and let it expire when we went o'seas. Haven't bothered looking into it again.

I haven't had roadside assist of any kind (NRMA included) in 10 years. In that time I once needed a Disco transport from Gundagai to Sydney that cost $350. I'm well ahead.

Why else do they offer the service...it is profitable and they feed off fear..that's insurance and calculated by Actuaries (they are accountants without a sense of humour :wink: :roll: )

I self insure and work on a user pays principle...that works for as long as everyone else subscribes to the annual fee.

I'm with the other guys - go with your local RACV, RACQ, NRMA whatever..

A little trick I found out about here... I have the top level RACV roadside cover in my wifes name - with MY car listed as the primary vehicle.

What that means is that the Disco is covered where ever we are - and Tricia is covered in ANY vehicle she is driving https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

So only time we may have an issue is if I am driving something else... which nearly never happens and I am reasonably mechanical so I'm happy to take the risk.

We get all the extended towing, accomation and hire car stuff and it costs me about $120 pa...

Cheap piece of mind to make sure the family is not in the $h!t if I am interstate and she breaks down. As well as great cover for those trips in the Disco thousands of km's from home https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I've just checked this out as well as my Disco is about to go out of warranty. The service is actually provided in NSW by NRMA and NRMA membership was cheaper so I'm going to go with them.

Interesting thread, I have just renewed my RACQ & Ultra membership for $116 for the year. When extended warranty comes around in another years time I wont be looking at that if the cost is $2,400.

I have the Disco in today getting the rear window wiper replaced on warranty. Even though I don’t use it.

We did this at RACV's suggestion. I have personal (top) cover nominating our son's car; my wife has top cover nominating our daughter's car.
We have top cover for any car we are driving (which we've had to use a few times), the kid's have top cover whenever they are driving their cars.

Worth a look for those who don't know about it.
