Hi all, l’m a bit confused about the compliance plate on my Series 2a. It is a H-suffix chassis number, so the last of the 2a models, but the date on the compliance plate is 01/72. I thought they moved to Series 3 in Oct 1971?
Also, when stripping down I found some interesting markings on the firewall. Do you think they are from the factory or perhaps from an Australian assembly plant? Has anyone else found these before? It is a factory red model which I am told was ordered by the Dept. of Lands, and bears a dealer plate for Faulls of Subiaco (WA?).
Look forward to hearing your ideas.

1. Compliance plates would have been only fixed to the very last of the S2a - I think they only came in about 1972. And they reflect the assembly date not the date the parts were made.
2. Australian assembly of 2a vehicles would certainly have continued after they stopped building them in Solihull. By that time a large proportion of the vehicle was built in Sydney, with a lot of locally supplied parts. There would have been a substantial backlog of kits on hand and on the water when 2a production stopped at home.
3. Batches of special colours may well have had the panels painted and set aside when the contract started long before the last of the batch was actually delivered - on the other hand, it is also possible that the bulkhead and compliance plate do not belong to the same vehicle - perhaps as a result of accident damage or rust repairs. In the near fifty years since it was delivered, there is plenty of opportunity for "mix and match"! Does the compliance plate chassis number match the number stamped on the chassis? And how about the Landrover identification plate on the bulkhead in front of the gearlever?

Thanks for that info John. The plate number does match the chassis number, so it’s probably a later assembly then. Thanks for clearing that up.

Thanks dgd69, I’ll start a thread soon on the build now I have the hang of posting. I’m in NSW, and the Landy was last registered in NSW (20 years ago) but I bought it in western Vic. Got your pm-

The date on a compliance plate is the date it is affixed to the vehicle and has nothing to do with the build date etc.
My guess is that the 2A was a new vehicle that was still at the assembly plant even though Series 3s had started to be delivered. When the 2a was sent out to the dealer after compliance plates came in, the compliance date would then affixed with the relevant date stamped on it.
I bet if you can research the build/assembly date vs the compliance plate you will find the build date is a lot earlier.

Good point - I should have made it in my post.

The only other info I have is the chassis number which indicates a 1971 build. The compliance plate actually refers to design rules 4, 7 and 8, which is one more design rule than on an early Series 3 I recently saw, which only had 7 and 8.
