Discovery 4 Spare Key Fob - Not working?

HI All.
I am now the proud owner of a 2014 Discovery 4 (The old faithful 2007 Disco 3 just had to go)
I received two key fobs with the vehicle from the dealer one works perfectly fine.....opens closes etc, tailgate all good, but the other didn't. I reported this to the dealer when it went back in for a few things I wasn't happy with and they said the replaced the battery and its all good now (I didn't check it until the weekend...…..oh no, it still doesn't work) T
he spare one that they said was just a battery replacement....when you push the button, the indicators flash like as if its unlocking, I do hear some form of movement inside the doors from the locking mechanism but the car is not unlocked??
Does anyone have a clue to what this may be please.

Take it back to the dealer again.

Seems like the replacement batteries were duds.

If not the batteries, unlock the car with the duty fob, then keeping the duty fob out of the car, i.e well away so that it cant recognise the duty fob, hold the spare key fob against the raised ridges underneath the steering column, then press the start button. The car should then recognise the fob and update the code and start the car.

The manual with the car details this procedure as well.

Both key fobs use a rolling encoding frequency, sometimes if the spare is not used often enough, the code gets too far removed so that the car doesn't recognise the fob

The above has worked for me every time. I've replaced batteries in both keyfobs, they seem to last about 2 years each.

I replaced the batteries in both my key fobs which I always alternate the use of, when I got the "Smart key battery low" on one of them. The same message still showed so I went to the stealers and they just removed the battery and pressed the buttons a few times to completely discharge it.
Seems to have worked as they're both working OK now.

If the key is like the one pictured in the video above. The battery is inductively recharged via the ignition switch
The spare key needs to be used in the vehicle regularly to maintain the charge
Having said that, I think the D4 has a different fob to the one in the video and has replaceable batteries

I have a 2013 D4.

Definitely replaceable batteries. Take the key slide off and use the key to pry apart the two parts. Needs a slight amount of force but nothing untoward. Replace battery and reverse process. Done. From memory they use a standard CR2032 but check what's already there.

If the battery in the fob is low the vehicle comes up with a dash readout 'Smart key battery low'.

Once it comes up with the message,the fob still seems to work for weeks,which is great as mine came up once when we were camping in a remote area for a few weeks.

Take it back to the dealer again.

Don’t mess with it. If it was sold with two keys it’s the dealers drama. If you leave it too long it will cost north of $700 to replace. By the by i have a GAP ID tool for my 2014 and it fully programmed a $25 eBay key. Tool paid for itself. But take it back and get them to show you its working. Good luck.

How did you work out the key fob was programable by the GAP tool? I’m in need of a spare fob and never thought of programming my own. This is a great solution

It is in the manual under “Adding a key”. It did not work originally for the 2014 update but an email to gap and they come back with an update in two days. Worked well. If you had the latest update you should be good to go.

Thanks for the reply. My gap tool in not here yet. I was actually after which brand key fob will work with the Tool. Having a look at eBay there are many to choose from.

I’ll have a look at the manual as well it would be helpful if you could let me know which brand fob you programmed.

This was the one I actually bought. Probably any 434mhz lr4 key will work.

obviously once you get it your GAP tool you’ll need to set it up and activate it first. Good luck
