G'day all,
After a few years of being without a landy, I just bought a P38A.
It's not with me just yet, but will post some pictures once I bring her home. It's a 2001 4.6 HSE, with obviously all the things wrong with it.
Usual culprits, EAS, dash and HEVAC bulbs, and many more I'm sure...
Can't wait to get it home and get involved. I got the landy bug owning a D1, then spent a few years living in the big east coast cities, (yuck).
Now I'm in country WA, the perfect playground for a P38 I reckon, long highway drives, and plenty of offroad fun. My better half has some long term health issues, so her comfort was one factor in choosing one of these.
We'll be having a cup of tea on the tailgate on the beach in no time. :)
Cheers, Sandman

Hi Sandman
Nice to have you join. The tailgate; that's one of the nice things I like about my D4 - sitting on the tailgate and having a nice coffee and bikkie and watching the world from some nice spot at a lookout.
We look forward to some pics of your comfy car.
Mike

Hey Gavin, I'm in sunny Dongara. We make pretty regular trips down to Perth, the next trip will hopefully be driving the P38 home, providing I can rope someone in to taking the other car up for me.

Goodo. Are you up to speed with the P38, or do you need any recommendations for those crazy enough to service them (not me)? I use DazzaTD5 on here (in Rivervale) for all my mechanical work, but don't know if he will want any more RRs to work on - if so, I'd recommend him.
I have a 1/2 way to P38 hybrid ie 95 RRC with TD5 that has been at Rovertech as a last resort for over 12 months now trying to fix some prior electrical bastardry by others.
About to head up past your way, but sorry can't be a chauffeur as I will be pulling our brick and my bride has to take our daughter's car to Kalbari, then we're off the the Centre and NW Qld, returning via Darwin.

Sounds like a great trip. I've got a mate in mind to drag along.
I wouldn't say I'm up to speed, but I know the drill, I wouldn't have dreamt of buying one without having the brains trust of aulro available. I should probably get the rovertech guys to give it a once over first...

I reckon that's a sound investment. Dont forget your Geraldton Whyatts are pretty up there too!

Cheers Steve,
I'll be back in Perth Tuesday, for some pics!:rulez:
Off the top of my head, the repair list looks like:
* EAS (everything probably, starting with new bags)
* HEVAC bulbs and zebra cable, dash bulbs
* SRS light investigation...
* Change for some more modest tyres
* Check the gas tank, if out of date, pull it out, otherwise think of putting it back on gas??
* At least an oil and filter change before I drive it home (on a permit).
It's looking like later in July before I can get it home.
Can't wait.

Still haven't picked up the car, but I have a date, will be driving it up on the 22nd.
My old image hosting is out of date, so until it's sorted, here's a link with the few quick pics i managed to grab.

[bigsad]There may also be some dark financial clouds on the horizon, so fingers crossed I can keep the car, and buy the parts I need...

nice colour!
I was stupid enough to go down this path at Christmas, my wife told me to get another P38 as I have missed my old one since selling it 5 or 6 years ago, and then recently seeing parts of it for sale on gumetree :(
I got a 2000, and hopefully it goes on its first reasonable trip next week after 6 months of odd weekends of dash out / bits replaced / air suspension fun / blood loss .
Good luck they are nice to drive :)

So after an oil change (was pretty manky) and some blocks under the bump stops, drove Perth to Dongara with zero problems. What a lovely car to drive on a decent road trip! Fantastic visibility, comfy seats, looking forward to getting it (permanantly) on the road.

Same colour as mine.
Be patient with the electrics, mechanicals are pretty straightforward.
Plenty of help on here.
There are NO stupid questions.

Howdy all,
Quick update, car is now home and has had a decent looking over.
First job will be some love for the EAS.
I've regenerated the dryer desiccant, and given the dryer new pipes.
The compressor needs a new piston seal, so will do the rebuild on that followed probably by a valve block birthday.
After that, front cover gasket needs replacing. Any tips for 'while I'm in there' jobs?

Just make sure it isn't the oil pressure sender leaking rather than the front cover gasket

Good luck with it - looks good in photos, well done. Dont listen to all the negative P38 stuff out there, Ive had mine 12 years and had very few problems really, no more than most would have with any 4wd.
Once you know them they are not that complicated or difficult to work on, compared to the fun & pleasure it will give you. The best part is there's a good bank of knowledgeable friends here on AULRO.

hey guys, well this didn't end up getting too far.
did a big parts order, changed a few things - window reg, spring conversion (sorry), then got tied with other projects (a recording studio), and now I've got a job overseas so she's got to go.
Another unfinished project, in the vehicle for sale section.
