Old Mate was lucky the tide was going out otherwise he would have been in all sorts of pain.
I beach launch quite often and the tricky bit is always the retrieve.
If it takes too long to get the boat onto the trailer the wave action will bog you down eventually so it is vital that you get the boat onto the trailer as fast as you can.[thumbsupbig]

Hi,
The locals at Sloping Main Beach launch from a very similar beach, but have a different technique.
The car never enters the water.
The trailer is rolled in on a length of rope, the boat floated off and the trailer retrieved by driving away along the beach, never straight up.
This breaks the suction of the sand on the submerged wheels.
Retrieval is the same, car on the beach parallel with the shore, trailer out on a rope, boat loaded and pulled out along the beach.
This is done even with 2WD.
Cheers

We used to beach launch on the NSW south coast using big yellow blow up rollers , roll the boat on the rollers and as one popped out the back you put it under the front and so on , ok for smaller boats .

I liked a Broome WA version. Dropped the boat on the sand 400m from the water. 10 minutes later we were floating and water line was 400m past us [biggrin]

It's a pity Flinders doesn't have a decent ramp as it allows easy access to Bass Strait for the blue fin and mako fishos. Inside the bay there are good fishing grounds around Flinders and Balnaring etc, its a long haul from Stoney point, the nearest ramp, as you have to go around past the dangerous middle bank where the surf rolls across. A decent ramp a Flinders would make life easier.

Of course it does help though launching of the beach when you drive a defender

My D2a V8 does it easy with tyres down to 18psi, low range and CDL engaged pulling a 5.4m Trailcraft out of the water.
Simply back in then drive the boat onto the trailer, All over in a few min and IF I get in strife it is No drama hooking up the spare Sarca anchor to the winch BEFORE I go down too far like the clown in the YouTube vid did[thumbsupbig]

The Kiwis have floating boat trailers. Roll boat and trailer into the sea, anchor trailer, reverse boat out, go fishing. When finished drive boat back into trailer, tie it down , then motor back to the beach, where it all gets pulled out up the beach on a rope. I've seen it done and it's a nifty trick.

I like watching some of the clowns at the local marina launching and retrieving. Great fun. One bloke with much shouting and bulldusting with equally loud partner undid the straps on his nice fairly new boat, roared back and jammed the brake on to shoot it off the back into the water. And shoot it off he certainly did...straight onto the concrete! Bang crash. Lovely stuff.
Not so much big mouthing but very red faces as they struggled to put it back on the trailer and disappear from all the cameras. :)
Seen quite a few cars launched there as well.

I was at King Ash Bay for a few months last year and one of my favorite passtimes was to grab a 6 pack and watch the fools at the boat ramp[biggrin]
I will be heading off to the mouth of the Fortescue river in a week or so and it is a gravel/stone bush boat ramp there so it should provide some entertainment for me[thumbsupbig]

How about a boat which takes itself out of the wet stuff and onto dry land, and maybe even onto the trailer ?

Rather neat. I like the way the wheels fold up. That would be so nice to launch that next to bozos having probs launching their boats :-)
But it does seem have quite a bit of wake compared to a normal boat so it will cause more damage to the shore and take a bit more fuel.

Slightly off topic, its not only vehicles that get into trouble launching boats.
Mate of mine flies helicopters in the Kimberly, this is what happened to one of the other pilots.
There are two(of many) rules for chopper pilots, never leave a machine below the high tide mark, and always make sure the emergency pack is on board before leaving.
After dropping off a tinny, and a group of fishermen/fisherwomen,the pilot left the machine below the high tide water level.
On return, both batteries in the machine were flat.
The result was one written off chopper, and a long wait in a croc infested, sand fly infested, remote area while waiting for a search party.

Just goes to show that stupidity isn't confined just to the boat ramp[bigwhistle]

I reckon that jet powered 4Wd boat would ride better than a stinking kidney belting trail craft ;)
Think it weighs 2T plus
Has a glass running surface
Would be fine in Chop and with that full cabin who cares if you park the bow through a green one ????
But with twin jet drives I would guess at best fuel burn of 1L per 400-500m in water mode

Seriously???
I have done about 400hrs so far in my 5.4m trailcraft sportscab in all sorts of weather and haven't had a problem.
Like ALL boats if it gets rough simply slowing down will improve the ride and the stability at rest with the trailcafts is well worth the sacrifice of a fine entry bow.
Fully loaded my boat will weigh in at about 2t and can still do 30+Kts[thumbsupbig][biggrin]

Yup Seriously
I’ve driven enough to know I put them firmly in the same category as a Quintrex made post 2000
But no matter - as long as your happy and on the water that’s all that matters!!
Oh and you must carry a lot of ****, Hull weight of about 600kg
DF175 is what 240kg
Say what 250kg of bang
You carrying a tonne of stuff?

Geez, comparing anything to a Quinnie is a big call. A mate of mine had the dubious pleasure of purchasing a 6 metre "Millenium Hull" Quinnie and kept it for about 3 trips across Moreton Bay. I was on the 2nd trip. What a crock of a vessel!
I'm a bit surprised by the Trailcraft weight as well.

My trailcraft is a Plate boat 5mm hull, 4mm sides Not a cheap and nasty pressed lightweight boat like a Quinnie.and it has a 2.25m beam.
I have installed a "Boat Latch" retrieving system that makes launching and retrieving the boat very fast and easy which makes a beach/bush ramp launch simple with very little risk of getting bogged in the process.
Fully loaded I carry 300l of fuel (120 in the tank and 180 in drums) which gives me a range of 300 miles @ 18-20Kts.
40l of water and enough food for a week, 3 blocks of beer, Cooking gear, pillow, sleeping bags, clothes,
dunny, 40l Engle fridge, with 2x 100AH "House" batteries which run independently via a solar panel to the 2x 80 AH boat batteries.
Plus fishing gear, cast nets, 100l esky, bait, tools/spares/oil, spare props, spare anchor/rope/chain plus various other odds and sods.
So YES it is a heavy setup.

Fair enough with your weight then, taking all the above into account. Is that tow weight or on water weight?
My 90's vintage, 6.1 metre plate Sportfish with full fuel, water, 3 batteries, fishing gear etc., weighed at a council transfer station, on the tandem trailer, came in around 1950 kg. Never camped remotely in it as t'was a bit big so no food, camping gear and the like. Also, no alcohol as I have always had "Dry" boats. I reckon the beers are always better when cleaning the catch and boat, anyway.:twobeers:

The Tow weight is about 1.5t, That is without all the extra gear and fuel as I am not a fan of using the boat as a trailer to carry extra kit when travelling.
I only load up the extra food, fuel, beer, water and other kit when I do extended stays living on the boat.
I am heading up to the mouth of the Fortescue River on the 10th of this month for a couple of months fishing and exploring the islands off the coast that stretch all the way down to Exmouth Gulf, The Montebello Islands are also well within range as well.
I run a semi dry boat (3 can limit for the day) But at the end of the days fishing/cruising There is nothing quite as good as quaffing 2 or more icy cold beers at the end of the day when you have anchored up or go ashore for the night [thumbsupbig]
The boat ramp at the mouth of the Fortescue is a rough and fairly steep gravel Bush ramp and with about 5m difference in tides so I am expecting that the retrieve/launch could get a little bit "Interesting" at times But I have contingency plans just in case this happens and both of the 4WD's we are taking are equipped with a winch so I cant see us having the dramas that the mob in the original post had on the beach.
With any beach or bush ramp retrieve/launch a little bit of common sense and planning goes a Long way in preventing you having "Dramas", Unfortunately all too many boaties lack the common sense needed nor do they plan for any problems they may encounter, Many also rock up to the beach/ramp with a few too many beers under their belt which is always a recipe for disaster as well.
One of the Best bits of kit I have seen to aid a beach launch is a towbar extension for the boat trailer which can give you an extra 3-4m which is usually plenty to keep your truck out of the wash zone[thumbsupbig]

My bush boat is a 5m Cairns Custom Craft , 140L fuel underfloor and F60 on the tiller.
It’s the Ute of the water. Can load a shed load of gear in it.
Anyways, that trailer has a spare hub onto a stub axle just infront of the winch post. Whack on a spare wheel onto the hub and you have a three wheel trailer. Can push it down most beaches if they are steep enough and rope it out
Or just drive it down at low tide get vehicle away safely ad wait for water
Trout I’m just taking the ****, I’ve run in three trailcrafts and in my opinion they are rough even for a platey .... each to there own though!
Your trip sounds awesome - great part of the country to explore by boat
