Hello All,
Maybe two years ago I fitted a brand new Bosch starter motor to Rebus, my Holden 202 Red Motored Series 3. The clutch failed and due to work and study it has taken a while to get back to the vehicle. When I went to start the engine the starter solenoid clicked loudly; however, the starter motor gear did not engage the ring gear.
The starter has been used to sort out Top Dead Centre, a new fuel pump failure and a carburettor issue. This means it has been used to do a lot of cranking over the time.
I have been keeping the new battery charged by a trickle charger which I was not quite sure if it was maintaining the battery properly. So this afternoon I took the battery for a drive and had it tested at Autopro. The battery passed the test. I figured it was either a problem with the battery or the starter motor. So having confirmed the battery was okay, I bought a generic starter motor. Once the new starter motor was fitted the engine fired up straight away.
What fault can have occurred in the Bosch starter motor from over cranking? The starter solenoid has a very loud and strong click so it has to be something else at fault.
Kind regards
Lionel
