Finished this one off last week, 2012MY L320 Range Rover Sport

Have added a few gadgets to this one.

- Factory digital TV retrofit
- Factory DAB+ digital radio retrofit
- Upgrade from the 600W Harman Kardon to 1200W Harman Kardon Logic7 Surround

And a little twist, the car had a pair of Mongoose DVD headrests installed by the previous owner, they are pretty crap tbh and have zero integration with the infotainment system in the car, the owner asked if we could get the factory TV to display on the aftermarket rear screens.

It'd never been done before, but I thought it would be possible one way or another, so I said yes to the job.

Have done the Digital TV and DAB+ retrofits enough times before, and surround retrofits too, but in the Range Rover Sport it's a bit different because the rear surround speakers are in the roof lining...

So we have to cut...

And after all that I forgot to take a picture with the grilles installed.... but it looks 100% factory with the grilles in place.

I got a headlining from a wrecked car to use as templates.

And Gerry the guy who makes my brackets did some templates to go from the front side as well. Worked out well in the end.

For the surround I had to make a retrofit harness, similar to the ones I've done for the Discovery 4.

My wires have the cloth tape around them, otherwise you wouldn't know.

Connection for the centre speaker in the dash, crimped terminals now.

TV module under the drivers seat, all that wiring made from scratch, it's a hell of a job takes hours but I say that every time.

So with all the "standard" retrofits done it was time to look at how to integrate those crappy Mongoose DVD screens...

The factory Rear Seat Entertainment has a video output from the front touchscreen to the RSE control module, for when you are playing DVD's or video from a USB stick, so I thought we could use this to feed in to the aftermarket screens. Only problem is the output is not functioning unless the car is configured for Rear Seat Entertainment. There are about 15x separate settings in the CCF to turn on for the full rear seat entertainment system, and I was thinking perhaps just one or two of those settings on their own would enable the video output, without bringing up the whole RSE menu on the touchscreen.

With a bit of trial and error, we worked it out, got the video output going, so then just a matter of adding a video splitter to go to both screens.

And it worked, could hardly believe it! Nobody ever did this before...

So for a car with just the front DVD player, this works fine with just the splitter, but I since added TV to this car which it's a further complication. The TV is on a different output to the DVD & USB, but I found an automatic video switcher solves that problem, if we select DVD or USB in the front, the switcher detects the video signal and switches automatically, likewise if we select TV, it detects the TV video signal and switches over. Fit perfectly under the left front seat as well.

Wow what a huge undertaking! Is the sound quality that much more noticeable?

Wow what a huge undertaking!
It was! I really underestimated the time/effort for the rear speakers in the roof lining.
I've done the exact same Surround, DAB+ & TV retrofits in a Discovery 4 and they are easily done in a day, but in the L320 it's a different story.
And of course I took my time with cutting the holes, it's not the sort of thing you want to stuff up LOL

Is the sound quality that much more noticeable?
The centre speaker in the dash totally changes the sound stage in the front of the car, for the better.
It's definitely a noticeable improvement over the standard Harman Kardon system.
Despite having "double the power" it's not really that much louder, but a more "full" sound if you know what I mean.
Having done these Surround retrofits in a lot of different JLR vehicles, it's always impressive to hear the difference.
Though the Logic7 is quite different to the Meridian in the later cars, in some ways I think it's a more natural sound, less processed than the Dolby, DTS or Meridian DSP's in the later systems.
