just heard on skynews that richard carlton collapsed while interviewing the mine manager in beaconsfield, and has died in hospital.
i suppose those jokes about channel 9 trying to get the scoop on the trapped miners by sending down their own 2 metre bore (richard carlton) are probably in pretty bad taste now.
so i guess i'd better not mention it then.

Hey, come on Mick. Where's your sense of humour gone?

Yeah it's sad that some chap has dropped down dead but I thought that the last comment was hilarious. 8)

the two guys stuck in the mine have injected their own wry humour into the situation.
they have accepted that they have a pretty good chance of getting out in good order and although they are as good as stuffed at the moment, they have managed to keep themselves sane by cracking the odd joke.

like richard carlton or not, you've got to admire him for his dedication to his job. i've never liked the way these current affairs shows go about their stories. they are intrusive beyond common decency.

as john saffran found out people like ray martin and his cronies can't take what they dish out.
when he was ratting through ray martin's garbage as a bit of a comedy sketch to see how the reporters from 60 minutes reacted when they had their privacy intruded apon, ray rang his mates at the ABC and the the show shelved.
i even think that to this day, the footage has still not been shown.

you didn't get a giggle out of that?
Oh well each to their own.
If I'd have known the guy I reckon I'd be pretty cut up too....but people die every day.
What's the big deal :?
Two blokes stuck in awell....depends how they goy there.
Now had they slipped on a banana peel and fallen in the well then yeah...that would be a bit of a laugh.
Now two guys trapped in a mine, well you wouldn't catch me dowen there.

Lighten up man.

I have a great sense of humor and anyone who knows me will tell you that!!

To make fun of someone’s death I don’t know I don’t get it nor find it funny.

Like you said each to their own.

I studied Journalism at Uni and I must say that Richrd Carlton was one of the best reporters I've seen doing the rounds of the Aussie Media. And he did die doing what he did best (and liked best) - asking people the hard questions.

Amazingly he'd had 2 major heart ops including one at age 44 or so I think it was. In truth he's probably lucky to have made it as far as he did.

Onya Richard.

I did. Typical Channel 9 - trying to get the ratings.

Late edit: I noticed the TV stations couldn't even get their stories straight. Some reported he died at the scene, others that he died on the way to Launceston. If they can't get that right, what do they get right?

What end will 9 use to improve its failing ratings? First the boss dies, again, and now they've sacrificed one of their best and on duty at the same time, and howzat for poor old Tracy having a bawl, is she next?

I've worked in news for far too long and I think its showing.....

Que sera sera.

But Richard will be back, a state funeral, no doubt...

But 9 missed its best headline, "Tassie mine disaster claims another life"

'The Chaser' will get it right.

No one said boohoo, about the the other miner that died. It's always sad for someone when there's a death, but just 'cause he's a so called reporter and celeb, we should feel sad? Don't think so

He died doing what he did best.

Putting himself "into" a story.
Asking inapproriate questions, being popularly subjective, taking cheap shots and looking to make sensationalism into journalism.

The mine boss and even the union rep, told him them there's a time for finger pointing, blame and recriminations, and this wasn't it.

The mine manager's answer to his question was that they were only concerned with getting the miners out at this stage.

I thought Richard took the rebuff a bit hard myself.

The one about interest rates? I don't buy the papers so I only write when I see a letter or article in a paper I get for free.

Richard Carleton had a wife and kids whom he doted on.

I worked with him covering the coup in Fiji, and found him to be a top bloke. He treated everybody with a lot of respect and had the balls to ask questions nobody else was game enough or smart enough to!

He was also well aware of his own abilities.

But....

Anybody who works hard and gives 100% to anything deserves to die as a nice old grey person in bed with thier family around them.

But then again.... if you live in the public eye, and choose to be there, then you really do take your chances. I'm pretty sure thet even Richard Carleton might have got a laugh out of the 2 metre tool joke! Even posthumously.

I'm sure he would have.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't dislike Carleton.

I also think that many people would get a laugh out of a joke about their own death if it occurred like Carleton's.

Jokes have always surfaced around deaths, e.g., those after the Space Shuttle explosion, e.g.,

Q: What does NASA stand for?
A: Need Another Seven Astronauts

The families wouldn't laugh over that but a lot of others did.

when they said he'd just finished signing an autograph for a fan and printed it in the paper, i half expected it to say;
"dear____, AAARRRRRGGGG!, love richard carleton"

sorry
