If anyone is looking for a media player to use Netflix or other streaming service i can recommend the vodafone TV unit.
Runs Android TV so can load any suitable app, has a built in DTV tuner as well.

Is this easier to use that a frigging Google Chromecast? They are a nightmare if you are trying to run one off a hotspot, etc. I have one of those but don’t use it because it’s too much of a pain to put up with.

Also, as per item 2 - 2) A Vodafone Wi-Fi Hub™ or other compatible modem

What is or isn’t compatible? Assuming it just needs a wifi connection?

Hell yes, we have an aldi cocoon as well and this craps all over it - does 4k as well.
I have a chromecast but was highly disappointing in how much mucking around it takes to use, it works well with a google home though.
Any wifi ap is fine.

Is it locked to Vodafone like the Telstra TV Roku box is locked?

I'm currently using my Sony BluRay player to stream videos from my Synology NAS box but it's a bit clunky.

No - the support page says it works off any internet connection - Get Started With Vodafone TV | Vodafone Australia (https://www.vodafone.com.au/support/device/vodafone-tv) - down the bottom under ‘additional information’.

Once you get a device working seamlessly it’s a good thing!

In Thailand I have an ExPat box - lots of everything! Works well most of the time.

Here in Whyalla I use AppleTV4k and Infuse app for NAS access. Then several other apps for TVOD etc.

I just found out I can use our Chromecasts to play videos downloaded with Kodi and saved onto our NAS box. Much easier than using the BluRay or copying the videos to a USB stick and plugging that into the TV. I used CC tonight to watch a programme that kept failing when played from the USB.

Also Tombie, thanks for the heads up on Infuse. I installed it on my iPad and watched some other stuff from the NAS box.

Kodi runs on these so will give NAS access and Samba share, all my media is on a 2tb hdd in an original xbox running XBMC (what kodi is based on ) . I have the built in media server enabled so we can access it like a NAS from any device on the network.
I recently upgraded my Logitech harmony remote to a 650 which works well on the VodafoneTV.

Also found that these have chromecast built in so that scraps an extra device.
