My mate has a v8 disco the motor has seen better days he has a BA xr6 turbo that was hit in the arss end and was wondering if the motor and auto would fit as the xr6 motor is in very good nick. If anyone has done it how hard is it to do and any ideas on extra parts that are needed thanks.

Doubt it would fit. Short V8 versus straight 6.

Cheers

Some pics I took last month of an 80 Series Tojo with probably the best motor it will ever have. [biggrin]

Nice. Smooth motor. The XR6 is a weapon. Cheers

Heavy bulky engine. Would not be an easy swap. Bigger capacity than a Disco's V8 and turbocharged as well. Might be hard to get approval from the rego. authorities. Plus side is that he already has it. If you had to buy an engine in I would favour an aluminium SBC.

Both (approximately) 4 Lts. Approvals (legit ones) are not that difficult. Have a mate up here with a 2.5 hemi Daimler motor in a Morry.

A mate just stuck one in his XP Falcon wagon which looks like poo but geez it doesn’t half haul now - brilliant sleeper. [emoji106]

Son had one to put in a Patrol some years ago but back then adaption..ecu issues etc was not an easy fix so he sold it on.

Nowadays all those issues are more or less sorted so he regrets selling it. Auto is pretty strong too.

The best ones are the gas motors which will take huge boost and abuse.

Plenty going into all sorts of cars now. ..lots in drag/ burn out cars of course as well as 4wds..f trucks etc

Make me think Aus was stupid to let the local car industry evaporate😐

Whats the plan for it?
The biggest hurdle might be adapting it to the Disco's transmission. I'm not sure what the similarities are between the ZF 4HP and 6HP. The Discovery 2 obviously used the 4HP but the Falcons later on used the 6HP. Perhaps a 6HP bell housing and input shaft fits or can be modified to fit the 4HP solving this issue? Alternatively the Disco could become rear wheel drive only (but then you'll have diff issues). Or maybe Territory transmission and what ever they use for AWD could be used?
Given the Discovery 2 only had motors that were four or five cylinders long, the longer six might not have the room (if it was a P38A for the conversion that would be a different story though). Looking at my Td5 the vicious hub fan takes up a lot of room. Maybe the six will fit right close to the radiator and then electric thermo fans on the front side of the radiator could be used?
I wouldn't think there will be an issue with width other than maybe fitting the turbo in there. Even a non-turbo Barra would be more poke than any of the standard Disco 2 engines.
Not sure on the engine height. Probably ok, but the BBM (inlet manifold) is high. There's aftermarket plenums to suit or something custom might resolve that or creativity with the engine mounts.
Obviously custom engine mounts and aftermarket ECU will be required. You might have fun integrating the aftermarket ECU in with all the other various CU's that the Disco 2 has for all it's systems.
There's going to be lots of custom bits, fit and trial and readjust to get it done but likely maybe doable. Good luck. Will be interested to hear.

From memory...when the LRV8 failed ..again..we looked into putting the son's Barra in the D1 and figured it would just fit. Adapting thou was gonna be v costly with no one having done it back then. So we fixed the V8 and sold it...well gave it away😐

Would be a v challenging job indeed me thinks.

Let me know when you find out how to do it!

I was considering it recently to replace my Td5 but the whole gearbox/ transfer/ diffs/ electronics seemed like a lot of work

I measured up a Barra to replace my Iveco engine when she blows, wont fit unless I put a bulge in the firewall or put a Pinzgauer nose on it & I wont be doing that . Since its got a mid mounted divorced TC I can easily put any Engine / gearbox that fits , will probably put a Commodore V6 & auto because they are cheap & plentiful. The original twin turbo 3L diesel only has 130kw / 400 nm so even a Commodore engine will have plenty of poke. I'm over diesels !

so the barra fits but my mate said that the mods that have to be done are costly and just a hassle to be bothered with he said he can fit an LS1 cheaper as all the mods are avalible I didn't go into why it was hassle as he would have his reasons for this line of thinking as he is a very smart person. thanks all

Laney how was cooling to be achieved? Did he look at radiator size type and cooling fan size type? Was he going to have to resort to electric? Keen to know how far he got with the planning.

Cheers

ozcott from what I understand he was going to use the xr6 cooling system but this needed some coustom work to fit I think this was part of his change of heart he is talking about selling the xr6 and going to the auctions to see if he can get a write off v8 holden or maybe an x5 diesel bmw. Sorry if Ican't be any clearer then that he is hard to keep up with and doe's my head in at times.
