My first 4 x 4 was a lj50 two stroke Suzuki, in between I have had cruisers, couple of patrols, Mitsubishi, but the best part of 20 years I have had a combo of discos and rangies. The best to drive by far was my p38 but it started to get some issues I didn't want to deal with, so with some hesitation we have parted company. I have just brought a Suzuki Vitara rag top and will eventually set up to toy behind my coaster m/home. As you can now see, full circle

LJ50 was my first also, seemed like a good idea at the time. My old man had rangies from about 1976 and all thru my teens but too expensive for a first car.

I sold LJ50's in Darwin.

We had a 'demo' track down near Stokes Hill wharf.

Some 'clients' would get out and walk back to Motorama on the Stuart Hwy near the city, muttering things like crazy bastrad, ****ing idiot etc

Those who sat out the test drive demo usually bought one.

certainly a handy little vehicle, seem them perform some magical self recoverees, from place they had no right to get out of . My crazy mate tried a river crossing one day and the little suzi was vertical in the water upto what would be the b pillar, mate total submerge and some how he put it in reverse and backed out. It then stopped, it was full of water. Couple hours later it was going again. Pull start with a rope around back wheel, memorys

Me too. First 4wd I ever drove in that 2S Suzuki. Classic exhaust note. Circa late 70s I think.

Probably met one of your customers in Darwin in 1979.

In two wheel drive he would tootle rings around the black soil bogged Toyotas belonging to his friends asking the drivers if they 'needed help', then saunter off without offering any.

In keeping with the 'Gods must be crazy, I don't have a service pit...' he winched the entire vehicle into the air from the branch of milkwood tree to do some maintenance.

He could (regularly) drift it at speed around a 90 degree dirt corner near where I worked.

Just a couple of years ago I had a Vitara tag along with me on some very average bush track. The Vitara nudge bar pushed into the bonnet and the rear trim ripped from it's mountings, and traction control left the driver rocking back and forth in a small runnel across the road.
