View Full Version : Britpart Rear Quarter Chassis trouble

Hi.
I need some advise from the forum.
Ive purchased a Britpart rear quarter panel for a Series 2 88 inch.
After measuring twice and cutting once, I figured I’d just slide the new part on to meet the jig I’d made for the job.
Problem is the new part doesn’t seem to bear much resemblance to the original.
The “legs” are a good 5mm wider apart than the original, and when they are placed over the chassis longitudinal rails, the rear cross member hangs down alarmingly.
Either this Britpart piece is well out of wack, or I’ve completely lost my mind
Can someone point me in the right direction please

Not sure what your problem is 5mm is close tolerance in Land Rover chassis measurements
Pull in or spread chassis rails to suit rear crossmember so it all lines up, more critical is hight of top of x member as chassis curves down at the back.
did this repair not long ago and from memory top of member was 35mm below level top section of chassis but don't rely on me just yet as it is late at night
l can measure tommorow on an unmolested chassis if you want.
Good luck with it and don't worry about neat welds or someone will twig it's a repair

I just fitted a rear cross member in my thread. Mine to was slightly wider (5 mm or so). I worked from a centre line down the chassis then to the new part.
For me, the inside faces aligned, and the outside faces were standing proud. For these I made a longitudinal cut down the length of the rail to allow me to pull that side in.
Top of rear cross member is about 35mm below the top face of the tub supports.

Too much consumption of the contents of the support structure? [bigwhistle]

If i'm looking at the photo correctly, your Britpart replacement is for a 109 , the 109 chassis side rail depth is about 35mm more than the 88 chassis.

I think i read in a magazine that the replacements where wider so they would go over the old chassis to give a stronger surface to weld on rather than doing a butt weld.
There may be a you tube about replacing chassis bits that could explain more.
Do Britpart should have a full set of instructions on their website ?
