View Full Version : Perentie LT95 DIFF LOCK

I've read a bunch of stuff about the vacuum operation of the diff lock on LT95s, but my Perentie has a lever on the floor to select diff lock. I'm still not certain if this was a diy remedy or if Perenties were created this way? There is no vacuum chamber attached to the front of the actuator. Does this mean vacuum has been totally removed from the diff lock?
My son got the car stuck and couldn't get it to move. I came to the rescue and found that diff lock had slipped out but when I put it in, it wouldn't stay in. Also seemed like the car only had 1 wheel drive like a broken axle.
So the scenario now is:
-Can get diff locked (light on dash), but doesn't stay locked
-No drive when unlocked so can only drive locked
-I think I only have 1 wheel drive

Wondering if there's still vacuum required to hold the lock in place?
Something broken inside?
Do selector forks break in these things?
How to determine which axle might be broken?

Any help greatly appreciated.

AFAIK all the perenties came with vacuum actuated centre diff lock
Yours sounds like a modification
Once the diff lock is engaged on the Petentie it is held in place by the vacuum actuator. Unless yours has some kind of locking mechanism (over centre or locking plate) I would imagine you have to hold it in. Not good.
With the CDL engaged you should have equal drive to the front and rear diffs (check underneath for both prop shafts spinning)
If you have snapped an axle ( most likely is the front left) you should still have drive to the other diff and be able to drive the vehicle with the CDL engaged

Another possibility is that you don’t have an Lt95a gearbox. Other early Defender and County boxes had a manual CDL actuator
Is it a four speed or 5 speed box?
All LT95a boxes are 4 speed

The shift mechanism looks a bit fabricated but it looks factory in the car complete with red knob. Lever sits right next to the tunnel on rhs.
Nothing to suggest it cams over center to lock in place.
And yes, I can drive it locked but pops out.
It binds up like it's locked front to rear, but trying to unstick it, it definitely only had one wheel spinning. I'll investigate axles starting with front left. Thanks.

It's 4 speed.
This one definitely looks like a 95 without the vacuum piece and engages at the side of the box
