110 Tdi vs 80 Series Land Cruiser

Good evening,

A mate of mine is looking at buying a simple, manual, solid axle 4WD for touring. His budget is mid teens. He used to drive a Series 3 with a Holden 202 which he loved. His heart says 110 Tdi, but his head says Land Cruiser 1HZ 80 series. Can anybody (who has had experience with both) shed any light on what what would be the preferred vehicle? He has test driven both and is happy with how both drive. What he wasn't sure about was reliability, cost of parts, durability etc.

I came from a S3 with a 186. I now have a TDI 130, my brother a 100series with non turbo 1HZ, both are go trucks, The Defender leaves it behind in most areas especially up hills and fuel economy. Cruiser is quiter inside. Has no where near the touring storage of a Defender, or the character.

At the end of the day probably easier to find a cruiser, as good TDI ' s are hard to find. Took me over 2 years to find a good 130.

We used to have a Disco Tdi and currently have a Defender Puma, while the BIL has an 80 series.
The 80's payload is only about 600kg from memory while the 110 can carry 1044kg, which is a huge difference.
The 80 would use around 16 l/100 kms, while the Tdi would use around 11.
The 80 is a crude and unrefined thing.
Toyotas are over-priced because of the so-called 'Toyota tax'.
Based on my BIL's experiences, I would say the idea that 80s are unusually reliable is a myth. They break down just as often as other vehicles.
So it's obvious which one I prefer.
