This is incredible stuff. The Washington " Special Actions group " in 1976 met and discussed options to retaliate to the NK's killing the two American soldiers. Options included a 'demonstration ' of firing a nuclear round from an ' honest john ' nuclear capable artillery piece, covert operations in NK territory to blow up industrial infrastructure, have cells of B52's drop radar guided bombs on SK territory as a show of forced, sink NK ships in a northern harbour, plus they flew in a couple of squadrons of F111's, F4's, mobilised the Navy, in other words, they were prepared to go to War. In the end they went in and chopped down the tree. All over an incident that could have been managed by having competent Officers and NCO's on the ground in the first instance.
