At procomp down here in Melb there is a guy who works there called Dave who runs 35" tyres on a 300tdi Disco but he has done some work to the pump. says it's a little over geared but having the defender transfer case might be in yr favor.... He also claims he stills get around 11 - 12L per 100KM i have seen this thing move and it's not bad kept up with my bog std TD5 Disco down the princes Hwy https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

u will find yr engine breaking will suk a little. the 300tdi will have enough torque to spin them don’t stress.

engine braking sucks big time with 33's, sh!t, I used to have to brake down hills with 32's (235/85/16's) ! I can't imagine how bad it would be with 35's.

i had 34's on my defender TDi, gearing wasn't the best for low range, 1st low is still ok but big jump to 2nd, so steep stuff you still had to run up in 1st although that is too torquey for loose stuff, but can't keepup momentum in 2nd, downhill wasn't too bad in 1st. i had a R380 box.
now have a 4BD1 T and 35's with stock gearing LT77 and stock 3:54 diffs and can climb as slow as i want in 2nd! so much more low down torque with the 3.9diesel over th 2.5.
just get them and mawby contact 'walker' on this forum as he is importing 4.11 diff ratios from pommy land which i suppose would bring you back to stock, and stronger too..

how can they be stronger than 3.54's ??
Great price that Walker is landing them for, and Ashcroft have a great reputation, but the pinion has to be smaller which means less tooth engagement which means weaker, or am I missing something ?
If I had the $$$$, I want to go 4.3 (TLC front) with a 1.22 (Disco) high range with 33's. Gives me a ever so slightly lower high range, with a 22% lower low range.

Yea your missing something, the after market gears use better materials and better hardening procedures hence the added strenght plus ther new not 20 years old, but your spot on in what your saying about tooth contact and a smaller pinion but these weakness's(sp?) are offset by the above
Also if you want torque at idle my ratbox with 6.2 chev diesel, LT77, LT230 with 1.003:1 high range and 3.54 diff gears with 33's will idle most anything in 3rd low, no feet at all

fair enough, I just wasn't sure/couldn't see this making up the difference, although a lot of poms use them without a problem, but they don't seem to eat CWP's like a few blokes out here do.

Yea but from what i've been led to believe none are worth buying unless you get the KAM's gears all the rest are ment to be ****e in comparisan, I ran KAM ratio's in my not so Gayrover and have had them for 4 years without failure, 35 centipedes, Ford EFI5.0l turboed for a while and pretty hard life.
Mate bought a brand new 3.54 GBR gearset and it lasted about 8 months with 318 mopar 33 Bf muds and a pretty cruisey life
