Secondhand help!

Hi guys,

I'm looking at a 2010 l320 3.0 tdv6 this afternoon with 45000kms. Just want to get an idea of things to look out for. I'll be taking an OBD2 code reader along. Checking control arms, listening for clumps while driving, checking the timing belt has been changed, asking about any air suspension gremlins, rust, battery age etc. Is there anything else in particular I should be looking out for?

Yep.

Check to see if the struts have been replaced - or if they are due to be.
Plug the vin into TOPix. See what options it left the factory. Check if it actually has them.

45,000 doesn’t seem many Kms for the age.

Depending on on your usage - there might not be that much difference between say a car that has done 70k vs 45k.

The reason I say that is to check the deal. That is one of the early updated L320s - you may get a car 3 years newer with only a few more km for a similar or lower price. I wouldn't want to pay top dollar for a ten year old car (although it might still be a great vehicle).

If you are going to keep it for a while, you'll do the big preventative maintenance either way.

Yep. That's the one. Thanks for the input guys. My wife and I have decided to go ahead with it. Turns out he uses the same mechanic as I, so I spoke to him about it. According to the mechanic (who is probably the only one in town I'd trust to inspect it prior to buying) it's in great nick, and the owner has never grumbled when he has wanted to do work on it.

Only issues were some seals needing replacing on the rear doors, and the gas struts that hold the bonnet up starting to fail... which does make one wonder how long they have been holding the bonnet up? :)

Acknowledged that there will be some expensive maintenance, but that's life. If all goes to plan it will still not get driven much over the next few years.

Hopefully, we will be picking it up this weekend, and then prepping for a trip from Darwin to Sydney through the center!!

If it does have the E-Diff that is a big bonus[bigsmile], not many cars have them. They are great pieces of kit.

Not necessarily, my '95 D1 had only clocked up 146,000 KM when I got rid. 24 years we had the old girl.
Some people just don't do the KMs but still like the vehicle.

According to a VIN search, no such luck. I haven't gotten underneath to look yet though...
